By The Associated Press (CP) 23 hours ago
INDIANAPOLIS The board of directors of the Society of Professional Journalists has voted to retire a lifetime achievement award named for longtime journalist Helen Thomas, who has made a series of controversial statements about Jews over the past year.
The board of the national journalism group made the decision on Friday.
The Detroit News says the SPJ's move follows one by Wayne State University to shelve the Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity in the Media Award over similar concerns.

National - or rational?
Civility.
That is a very leftwing group.
They want to ban “illegal immigrant”
When has SPJ gotten leftwing?
That’s pretty funny. Her “award” got retired before she did.
I thought, from the headline, that they were going to retire HER.
Now they can replace it with the J. Eric Fuller Prize for Objectivity in Reporting.
didn’t they decide last week that “illegal alien” was an offensive term and should not be used by the press?
didn’t they start the Helen Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award?
isn’t that enough?
... retire the phrase "professional journalists" since it no-longer has any ties to the real world?
Seriously, "professional journalist" ??? Where? Any time I run across a MSM "news article" it might as well be an op-ed piece written by a socialist PR firm.
Journalism has sunk significantly lower than used car salesman, or even personal injury lawyer as far as lack of ethics and "professionalism."
RIGHT! they should be renamed Propaganda Professionals!
Take a hint.
Remember, these are professional journalists.
