An ex-Weather Underground radical on the Tucson shootings and political violence
By Mark Rudd
Sunday, January 16, 2011

In 1970, when I was 22 years old - the same age as Jared Loughner - I was a founder of the Weather Underground, an offshoot of the antiwar group Students for a Democratic Society. That spring, a small contingent of the Weathermen, as we were known, planned to plant three pipe bombs at a noncommissioned officers' dance at Fort Dix, N.J. Our intention was to remind our fellow Americans that our country was dropping napalm and other explosives on Vietnam, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians. I wasn't among the bombmakers, but I knew what was in the offing, and to my eternal shame, I didn't try to stop it.

I considered myself an agent of necessity in a political revolution. I'm not sure if Loughner, who seems to suffer from mental illness, can be considered an agent of anything. But I'm sure that if, as alleged, he pulled the trigger, he had convinced himself that he was doing what needed to be done.

Bill Ayers had a great write-up in the NY Times and reprinted in rags all over America where he said he was NOT sorry about the bombs.....

.. that published on Sept 11, 2001

Sounds to me like Rudd atoned for his sins and has turned his life around. I thought it was a well written story.

Well-written? Yes, it was.

But I wonder if he's really "turned his life around".

Since he got out of jail, the only job he's apparently held was as a math teacher at a community college in New Mexico. He also wrote two books -- both of them failures.

Yet, he seems to have retired in comfort -- to "a ranch in Western New Mexico, near the continental divide".

He makes frequent personal appearances and has a radio show (Progressive Network). See his website.

I don't believe he is making the personal appearance and running a radio show because "he has turned his life around".

He's still preaching subversion. It's not violent, but it's still subversion. Which is in line with the strategy the socialists are currently following in the USA.

Their goal hasn't changed: Communism in America. Only their tactics have.

Mark Rudd’s website says that his commitment to “fighting U.S imperialism”[2] was inspired by the revolutionary movement in Cuba, which at that time was in its ninth year.[3] In 1968, Rudd and Bernardine Dohrn and other leaders of SDS were invited to Cuba to meet with Cuban, Soviet, and North Vietnamese delegates.

His experiences in Cuba strengthened Rudd’s anti-war and pro-Communist sentiments.[4] Rudd had described the life of Cuba as “extremely humanistic” and he idealized Ernesto “Che” Guevara, referring to him as the “Heroic Guerilla.”[5]

Read the article carefully. He hasn't changed.

Note that he only condemns so-called right wing terrorists - McVeigh and Roeder for example - but doesn't bring up animals like Nidal Hasan, Mohammed Atta, Seung Hui-Cho, or any of an endless parade of Muslim, left wing, alien mass murderers who have rampaged across America in the last few decades.

Nope. Just the ones who fit the Left-Liberal stereotype of Evil White Guys Killing the Sacred Minorities and their Supporters.

Rudd's still the snotty prick who took over a university like it was his own goddamn property. A narcissist who feels nothing for anyone else, just feels sorry for...Mark. And all those bad decisions.

Still the same guy. Just figures he coulda been a bit more sly about how he brought down "The Man".

You got it man. And their most successful tactic ever now sits in the White House.

>> The FRAKING WASHINGTON POST gives this guy SPACE? And pays him to explain his TREASON?

I’m glad he’s been awarded the exposure. This helps to make the connection the public has neglected. Yeah, it’s frustrating to think he’s been given a pedestal, but truth be told, he was given rope.

I believe he was lamenting the fact that someone he considered brilliant and passionate were so wrong in their tactics. He said that although they lost their lives when the bombs exploded "prematurely" that the greater tragedy would have been the planned conclusion of their mission. Their deaths were the turning point in his life. He left the Weathermen at that point.

On March 6, 1970, the Weather Underground's bombs, assembled in a New York townhouse, exploded prematurely. Ted Gold, Diana Oughton and Terry Robbins - three brilliant and passionate young people who had decided that they must become terrorists - were killed. Only by their deaths was the greater tragedy we were plotting avoided. Emotionally shattered, I dropped out of the Weather Underground but remained a fugitive until 1977.

After I turned myself in, I spent the next 25 years trying to figure out why I had made so many disastrous decisions as a young man. One of my conclusions was to pursue only nonviolent action - righteous action still, but without anger or brutality.

Your link didn’t work.

I have no idea what his political leanings are today. He may still be a radical. Teaching math seems to be a non-controversial subject to teach. But he left a life of crime and that’s what is relevant to his turnaround. He is operating within the law.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to be “snippy”. However, he didn’t do anything to me that requires my forgiveness.

I read it pretty carefully. Since he turned himself in back in 1978, has he been living within or outside the law?

In my younger days I knew two men who had actually fought in the mountains with Castro. They deserted him when he became (or announced that he had become) an avowed Communist. They were young, altruistic and terribly stupid.

For Rudd and the others to praise Castro after the total Communist takeover of Cuba is beyond forgivable, especially for middle class American kids who could get back on a plane and return to all the comforts their American life offered, while trying to tear it down.

Here it is, in plain language.

http://www.markrudd.com/

I found it on Bing. And now I note that it is a cached page. So his website may be down -- and the only to acccess the cached page is thru Bing (or Google).

If I could get you on his website, you'd recognize that he hasn't given up trying to foment a revolution. He's just changed his tactics -- staying within the law (so far as we know).

Precisely. Barack Obama is a direct descendant of Mark Rudd. Or, more accurately, William Ayers.

What is this piece of crap doing outside of a jail cell? In In a free country, where we have rule of law prevails, people like Bill Ayers and Mark Rudd are simply “murderers” or “mass murderers”, and are dealt with accordingly. When citizens are subject to the law, criminals can’t be simply be “rehabilitated” by like-minded politically connected pals, as are political prisoners in communist countries.

Sure, we have always had shady characters with “friends in high places”. But what has become of us when a scumbag like Rudd and Ayers can become a “retired community college instructor” or enjoy a career as a “education theorist”?

“However, he didn’t do anything to me that requires my forgiveness.”

Then don’t forgive him. Really, I could’t care less.

Now good night and don’t let the dream weaver mess with your head. :-)

“... three brilliant and passionate young people who had decided that they must become terrorists - were killed.”

How brilliant could they have been, if they blew themselves up? They were dumb asses trying to make a bomb.
