“yet we, as American citizens, can’t travel to an island 90 miles from our border because.... ?”
Well,,, I figured it was so Castro wouldn’t get any bucks from here. He nationalized any American companies that were in Cuba, and seized any American assets he could. Cuban Missile Crisis. Stuff like that.
That was 50 years ago. 50. How has this policy of isolation worked? What has it accomplished in the last 50 years?
We have made friends with North Vietnam, China and Russia in that time. We are still friends with Venezuela and Mexico (who has been systematically invading the US for the last 50 years). But we have isolated Cuba. Boy we really taught them a lesson, didn't we? What lesson exactly have we taught them?
I forgot to add the Mariel Boatlift. Castro publicly stated “I have flushed the toilets of Cuba on the United States.” He emptied the jails of criminals, and also emptied the insane asylums, and shipped them here. I say we shouldn’t spend our bucks in Cuba. If you really want to go, I think you can get there easily from the Bahamas.
I have zero desire to go there. OTOH, I don't think I should try to prevent others from doing something that I don't like. That is what Liberals do. They don't like people smoking, so they outlaw smoking. They don't like people using gun metaphors, so they outlaw gun metaphors. They don't like guns, so they want to keep everyone from owning one.
The Isolation policy has not worked any more than gun control laws have prevented criminals from using them to commit crimes.
If a policy hasn't worked in 50 years, should you continue to insist that it will and then keep it up for another 50 years? Or should you maybe admit that it hasn't worked and come up with a new policy that might?
So true. Thank you.
