I saw this movie yesterday. Its excellent.
Freepers turned me on to other movies I would have never seen if not for Freeper comments on it. Like, City Island, Sophie Scholl The Final Days, Life Is Beautiful, and As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me. all of them GREAT! movies that I am so grateful I did not miss.
Can’t wait to see it! In my own personal theater (my bedroom). :)
IIRC, Winston Churchill recounts that he and King George in 1940 would practice shooting Tommy Guns....neither was going to leave Britain if the Germans invaded, and intended to shoot it out and not be taken alive.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.-- Leslie Poles Hartley
Best movie I have seen in years.
Saw this on New Year’s Eve - outstanding. Not the typical Hollywood sanctimonious garbage.
From the Sublime to the Ridiculous.
Yes, I’m a big Anglophile, and numerous Freeper endorsements are certainly a highly respected source of further motivation.
Ultimately, I’m afraid however, that this will be a sad experience; representative of a great, courageous and civilized British culture, that is gone forever.
Yes, there's quite the story there, eh?
No doubt he never felt comfortable with public speaking, but he was able to handle it, although his delivery was always awkward, as can be heard in his broadcast speech of September 3, 1939, the start of WWII.
This said, I can't resist a comment on Pinkerton's observation about a leader recognizing his duty and obligation to work on overcoming his own shortcomings:
Realizing that history would summon him to duty, like it or not, our prince--played with Oscar-grabbing understatement and poignancy by Colin Firth--resolves to improve his speech, seeking out the best speech therapists in London.
It is ironic that viewed through the lens of history, most people here will rightfully consider the King's willingness to humble himself and acknowledge he needed help to improve a skill set necessary for him to do his job effectively as a noble and laudable thing to do.
However, whenever I and others suggested that President Bush would have benefited from doing something similar, we were roundly castigated... /g
Thanks for the ping.
Colin Firth won best actor at the Golden Globes last night for his role as King George VI.
This is usually a good portent for the Oscars ( a deserving one too ).

A fantastic film. I’m not a big Geoffry Rush fan, but I thought he was unbelievable in this film. The way that he and Firth played off each other was spectatcular.
