Opponents speak out against tuition vouchers
Thursday, January 20, 2011
By Tom Barnes, Pittsburgh Post-GazetteHARRISBURG -- In his inaugural speech, Gov. Tom Corbett barely hinted at what is sure to become one of the most hotly debated issues of the spring -- "school choice," also known as "tuition vouchers."
It would be a major change in how the state funds education.
"Our students compete not only with those from the other 49 states, but with students from around the world," the new chief executive said Tuesday. "So we must embrace innovation, competition and choice in our education system."
The measure, Senate Bill 1, is so numbered "to reflect its priority status," said a main sponsor, Sen. Anthony Williams, D-Philadelphia. It would allow low-income students from "persistently poorly performing" public schools to switch to other public or private schools -- and receive taxpayer-funded vouchers to pay their tuition.

Mr. Williams said, "Standing in the way of school choice for needy kids in failing urban schools is like Gov. George Wallace standing in the doorway of a classroom to continue the segregation of the 1960s. Too many children are trapped by their ZIP code in schools that are not making the grade. Let's open the doors to freedom and opportunity."

Lots of stuff going on next week.
Ping.
Corbett and crew are off to a good start!
Hoo boy, the teacher’s union monster is going to bare its fangs big time at this. Incidentally, that’s a perfect time to bust it in the chops!
The Democrats are the education status-quo party
The current education system (with all its problems) IS the Democrats' system. They controlled it for the last 50+ years; they brought it to this state; they will not change anything about the current system.
Why do we never hang this albatross around the Democrats' neck?
Why do we let the Democrats get away with false talk about improving education?
Why don't we tell voters the way it really is? If they like they current system, they should vote Democrat (because Democrats aren't going to change it--for better or for worse--in any way, shape or form). If they want to improve the system, they should vote Republican.
Why?
Sen. Anthony Williams is an gun grabber and an ultraleft libtard on most issues, but he is right on the money here. If this bill gets traction, and I think it will, you can watch for the local union hacks spreading fear campaigns about blacks and other people of color flooding good performing suburban schools.
Giving credit when due...he’s right.
But unions will be screwed if black kids ever get off the Dem plantation.
Rescinding that law would defang the PA unions.
I agree he's right - but don't count on this bunch of teachers to turn over the plantation model, won't happen in this decade.
President Kennedys Executive Order 10998, allowing Federal unions, is what opened the door for public sector unions at the state and local level, which is leading to bankruptcy from bloated public sector salaries, benefits, and retirement plans. Businesses that offered plans like many governments have would go bankrupt. Govt entities will, too, eventually, but it will be much more painful.
This is why unions should again be outlawed for public employees.
The practice of keeping bad teachers "dancing lemons," revealing the sad practice of shuffling bad teachers around the system instead of firing merely because they may have tenure on the job. While new teachers are automatically laid off due to budget cuts, teachers that have a disciplinary problem or a troubled history are kept because they've been on the job longer. This is wrong and reflects badly on the union and teachers alike, not to mention that it leads to a bad education for our kids.
What is the purpose of teacher unions? To work for children? Establish new and better requirements? Push their members to better serve parents and children?
"Despite what some among us would like to believe, it is not because of our creative ideas. It is not because of the merit of our positions. It is not because we care about children. And it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power. And we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues each year because they believe that we are the unions that can most effectively represent them, the unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees" ...National Education Association's just-retired General Counsel Bob Chanin. (The NEA is the County Association's parent body).
NEA General Counsel Bob Chanin Says Farewell:
As legendary New York teachers union leader Albert Shanker said, "When school children start paying union dues, that's when I'll start representing the interests of school children."
All government unions should be banned. The idea that government workers need protection from guess who?? THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, is ridiculous. remember, teachers are government employees. Ban government unions.
The brutal fact of the matter is the cost keeps many undesirables from accessing private schools. Once they get in and the private schools become dependent upon that money, they'll become just as degraded the public schools.
That was a thought of mine. The whole point of the skill of private schools to give a good education is because parents pay so much and they also provide a solid learning environment.
I believe the same. School choice will allow the feral offspring of these lowlifes to destroy not only their own neighborhood schools, but all nearby public and private schools. No thanks.
But, if that were true, wouldn't the liberals be totally supportive??? {just asking}
Upper middle class white liberals are hypocrites. We all know that, so of course not. Not until they can figure out how to implement it in a way that keeps the benighted urban youths out of their private schools.
School vouchers are to inner suburban private schools as Section 8 vouchers were to inner suburban neighborhoods.
and if you want to laugh and/or cry look at the thieves here in the Keys: The comments are better than the stories:

Not really - a voucher system would also let the private school turn away the troublemakers - that's an essential element
