Here's an idea, since we are so interested in joining hands at the State of the Union-- The response to the SOTU is always hollow, by someone standing alone delivering a dry, tepid speech. No one listens, and if they do, it always pales in comparison to a President speaking to a packed assembly in the House chamber.

How about instead, we do this:

In introducing the President, the Speaker of the House speaks for a minute about the history of the SOTU. How it is in the Constitution, and started out as a simple message delivered to Congress. He can mention how GW's SOTU was 3 paragraphs, that Presidents started delivering them personally in (whatever year it was) and that with the advent of nationally broadcast addresses, they have become major annual events. "And with that, we give you President Barack Obama, to deliver his address as to the State of the Union".

Then, at the end of the SOTU, the Speaker turns to the gallery and says, "Thank you very much, Mr. President, for delivering the SOTU. Now, for a commentary by the House of Representatives regarding the President's comments, the chair recognizes Congressman Paul Ryan".

Then, in front of that same packed chamber, Ryan gives his address.

I know, I know, I'm dreaming. What I would do is not what Boehner would do. He will be shaking Obama's hand and glad-handing after the speech. But Ryan ought to at least find a way to deliver his address to an audience. Maybe he skips the SOTU and delivers his speech to an arena in his home district or something like that. The arena could have a jumbotron where they have watched the SOTU first. We could have live video of the attendees booing Obama. Then cut to Ryan.

That is something that I think could be done, even by Boehner.

That is the plan.

Isn’t it sweet.

Kinda like a date without having to spring for dinner. Will they all hold hands?

I’m thinking we should be asking for a DADT rule just for the politicians.

There is no way in hell that we should be doing ANYTHING to help Obama with his public rehabilitation campaign and as I see it, that is exactly what this nonsense does.
