If you're unemployed, you generally feel useless. So, getting a job and some level of income is better than having a job and no level of income (or being on welfare).
I know people who flop along without a job for a long time, because nothing is suitable to their desires and salary requirements.
I never understood how no salary was leading to a better life than a salary that was smaller than you'd like. There's a lot to be said for just getting in the workforce. Also, just getting a foot in the door isn't a bad thing either, in case other opportunities arise.
