Victim's scars, medical bills replay horrors of chimp attack (sanctuary cover-up)
St. Petersburg Times ^ | January 23, 2011 | Lorri Helfand

Maturen, 22, had been a volunteer at the sanctuary for more than three years. She recalls the events of Feb. 12 [2010] in great detail.

[snip -- she relates the horror in detail next]

No one from the sanctuary called 911...Just before 11:30 a.m., someone else did call. A man told the dispatcher..."Something's happening over there," he said. "I don't know if one of those apes got loose, but we had to run out of there real fast, and there were women screaming over there."

Deputy Gregory Mason arrived at 11:37 a.m. and found the gates locked....

[snip -- she relates how she was left on the floor of the bathroom while they coaxed the chimp back inside before secreting her off site to a clinic]

Debbie Cobb came to the sanctuary entrance again and told the deputy that Maturen had called a friend to get her. Mason, still outside the gate, called a sergeant, who arrived with another deputy about 12:40 p.m. After that, Cobb let them in.

....About 1 p.m...her husband found Maturen at "Dr. Wendy's" clinic...an advanced registered nurse practitioner....Maturen's injuries were too severe for her to handle. Her office called 911 and Maturen was taken to Helen Ellis.

Mason summed up his report by saying sanctuary workers were "uncooperative and intentionally deceptive and evasive."

It appeared that Maturen "was at the sanctuary with severe and potentially life-threatening injuries while I was outside trying to find out what happened and check on her," Mason wrote.

....She plans to sue the sanctuary.

Sanctuary officials referred questions to lawyer Thomas Dandar, who declined an interview.

The Times sent him seven questions via e-mail. He answered one, about medical expenses, saying, "We attempted to assist in negotiating a reduction in her medical expenses, but she would not cooperate."....

Andrea Maturen, accompanied by fellow Suncoast Primate Sanctuary volunteer Tina Ercolano, spoke with the media just four days after she was attacked by a chimpanzee housed there.

Shawn opened a door to escape her enclosure, then attacked Maturen on Feb. 12.

A lot of the people who run animal “sanctuaries” like this are complete flakes, and they’re often pretty sneaky because they know the animals are dangerous and people - such as their neighbors - are rightfully afraid of them and don’t want them around.

We have a tiger sanctuary not far away that got its permit because the woman completely lied about what type of animal she intended to house there. So now the neighbors have to put up with roaring at all hours and a very reasonable fear that one of her several tigers, jaguars, etc. will get out and attack them or their livestock.

Chimps and monkeys are all evil and belong either in the wild or forever in inclosures. I still can't rid my mind of that poor lady who literally had her face ripped off by one of these things.......

Jane Goodall Returns to Her Chimps in Tanzania...Dwindling Numbers Due to Poaching and Habitat Loss Worry Chimp Expert

[Excerpt] Asked what she loves about them, [Jane] Goodall said, "Just everything."

There was little "Google," at nearly two years old one of the youngest there. There was also Google's mother "Gaia," who Jane has known for 17 years.

His grandmother "Gremlin," Goodall says, is one of the oldest and most gentle chimps in the forest. She has known her since she was born in 1970.

They also spotted 12-year-old "Glitter," Google's aunt.

Today, the chimps are so used to humans they don't mind getting close.

But since it's now known that chimps can catch our infectious diseases, we had to keep a safe distance. ...[End Excerpt]

The environmentalists and animal rights activists have elevated these animals, putting them on par with us. We are not allowed to say we “own” a dog or cat. They want them to have rights and lawyers. It serves to diminish what humanity is.

I think about that woman too.

Too many people want to make these animals human.

From the article:

“The 121/2-acre sanctuary is just north of Alderman Road on Alt. U.S. 19. It houses dozens of animals, mostly primates. Chimps are among those the state says pose a significant danger to people.

Originally known as Noell’s Ark Chimp Farm, the facility opened as a roadside attraction in 1971. Debbie Cobb is the granddaughter of founders Bob and Mae Noell.

The sanctuary had to close to the public for nearly a decade after the U.S. Department of Agriculture stripped the sanctuary of its federal license to exhibit animals in 1999. The agency said the farm used cages that were rusty, small, dirty and had jagged edges.

In 2001, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission denied the renewal of the sanctuary’s license for similar reasons. Two years later, the license was reinstated. But the sanctuary did not reopen to the public until 2008.”

Too many people want to make these animals human.

Back in the 70's when I was young, there was a cute gal who worked for a travel company that would deliver airline tickets to our payroll dept for our plant executives.

I asked her out for lunch one day and while at the restaurant, she said she had a pet monkey at home......I don't know what kind nor did I care, I never asked her out again. I don't like monkeys of any kind and anyone who would own one has to be just as creepy........

What makes people think it is okay to keep a wild animal in their home; one who can tear them to shreds?

It boggles the mind. Anyone who would do this, is uninformed or has given leave of their senses.

I hope she got smart real quick Hot Tabasco, for her sake.

This story was very weird. They were taking the chimp a birthday cake. The reason the chimp was there the owners lost an 8 year court battle trying to keep the chimp at home. The chimp had attacked neighbors and bit off a meter readers finger

A full grown male chimp has the strength of 5 men. A vet in Seattle got attacked by one who bit off his ear. He was able to get the chimp back in the cage. Bleeding the vet went to his car, got a hand gun and emptied it into the chimp. PETA was very upset

"The environmentalists and animal rights activists have elevated these animals, putting them on par with us."

More accurately, they've placed them upon a pedestal, believing they're better than humans. During my time in Africa, I came to understand why Africans are terrified of these animals. My visit to the Jane Goodall Primate Research facility in Burundi taught me that all the "show business" apes we've seen on TV and in the movies are in fact small, easily managed juveniles. An adult male chimp is an incredibly large and dangerous animal, and, by definition, lacks a moral compass. It's an animal. Too many people forget that simple fact, and blur the distinction between human and animal.

There is a very small variety of monkey (spider?) that is quite helpful for quadraplegics; they're also too small to do any significant damage to a person if they "go bad".

From your story:

By the time St. James and LaDonna saw the enclosure, it had been repaired and cleaned. LaDonna was perplexed. The cage was spotless. There were no blankets, there was none of Moe's stool

I don't think Moe escaped, I suspect he either died, was killed or he was sold off........

Years ago, I knew a caretaker of primates who would push his false teeth out of his mouth when he walked into the lab. Talk about going “ape shit”. I learned real quick why the cages were built like jail cells...

Moe sprung the other two then split. All kidding aside though, if memory serves me correctly, a few days later they found dead chimp in the brush not far from the shelter. Never verified if it was Moe. No one should have to go through what this guy has, but he truly thought Moe was his son. They guy was undone from the get go.

Urp. I have always felt that Jane Goodall was just a tiny bit - well, maybe more than that - metnally disturbed.
