ow do you sell a movie called "Captain America" to an overseas market? In South Korea, Russia and Ukraine, apparently, the answer is you don't even try.
The film "Captain America: The First Avenger" will have its title truncated to, simply, "The First Avenger" in those three overseas markets, according to Marvel Studios insiders. The choice was made by Marvel, Paramount Pictures' international team and distributors in those three countries based on market research results.
Those involved in the decision are being careful to frame the move as a matter of brand management and consumer awareness and not as a decision tilted by cultural or political winds.

Does South Korea have a lot of anti-US sentiment - as bad as Russia?
You’d have thought since America gave them everything they have, they would have a bit of gratefulness. No?

I really don’t care what they call it overseas as long as its presented as a pro American movie here.

Reeve came up with the story of Superman IV. He would only take part in that film if they did that story.

Just about EVERY American film is called something else in other parts of the world. This is not a surprise.

Sometimes I think the push to make international sales is the reason why so many American movies are so simplistic and action oriented. Witty and thoughtful dialog is tough to translate. Explosions, boobs and kicks to the crotch are easy to export.

Have you ever noticed that the only super hero formula which really works is in the initial movie - the backstory to how the particular hero came to have super powers?
The sequels are always a let down.
Superman, Batman Begins, Spiderman, Ironman...not the Green Hornet though. Please, please Merciful Jesus, I pray to You, let there never, ever be a Green Hornet sequel.

Really? I thought that Spider-Man 2 and X2 were easily the best of those series, and The Dark Knight was excellent. I think they have been batting about 500 here...

Call him "Captain UN"
Instead of flying from tall buildings, he throws secretaries from them. Instead of parking legally, he crushes cars to make room for UN diplomats.

What was anti-American about it?
The only thing “anti” was the messed up “Truth, Justice, yada yada yada”.
Other than that, nothing anti-American at all.

The only thing anti was the messed up Truth, Justice, yada yada yada.
The exact line was "Does he still stand for truth, justice ... all that stuff?"
The line was delivered by Perry White, and was COMPLETELY in keeping with the character's long-established personality. Going back decades. There was nothing "anti-American" about it - the writers of "Superman Returns" were serious Superman geeks, and for all the flaws of the movie that line wasn't one of them.
