China to create largest mega city in the world with 42 million people

China is planning to create the world's biggest mega city by merging nine cities to create a metropolis twice the size of Wales with a population of 42 million.

City planners in south China have laid out an ambitious plan to merge together the nine cities that lie around the Pearl River Delta.

The "Turn The Pearl River Delta Into One" scheme will create a 16,000 sq mile urban area that is 26 times larger geographically than Greater London, or twice the size of Wales.

The new mega-city will cover a large part of China's manufacturing heartland, stretching from Guangzhou to Shenzhen and including Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Jiangmen, Huizhou and Zhaoqing. Together, they account for nearly a tenth of the Chinese economy.

Over the next six years, around 150 major infrastructure projects will mesh the transport, energy, water and telecommunications networks of the nine cities together, at a cost of some 2 trillion yuan (£190 billion). An express rail line will also connect the hub with nearby Hong Kong.

"The idea is that when the cities are integrated, the residents can travel around freely and use the health care and other facilities in the different areas," said Ma Xiangming, the chief planner at the Guangdong Rural and Urban Planning Institute and a senior consultant on the project.

However, he said no name had been chosen for the area. "It will not be like Greater London or Greater Tokyo because there is no one city at the heart of this megalopolis," he said. "We cannot just name it after one of the existing cities."

"It will help spread industry and jobs more evenly across the region and public services will also be distributed more fairly," he added.

Mr Ma said that residents would be able to use

China has truly emerged as the probable next superpower. Of course, in time, they, too, will be eclipsed by another country. Such is the fate of all nations.

Makes sense from a purely administrative standpoint, as those cities are already growing into each other. And they don’t have to worry about the views of pesky citizens to create this monstrosity. It’ll have 100 million people in it by 2050.

China is like the six year old child trying to best the neighborhood 12 year old.

“We now have the biggest city.” Who cares?

And I think Chinese citizens actually have to have passports to get services from other cities; they seem to be totally restricted to one city in terms of medical care etc.

This will be a statist utopia inhabited by chip implanted drones following every command of the Chicom leadership. Tom Freidman, the NYT gang and zero would be so proud.
Clockwork Orange, your time has arrived.

It would actually be 49 million if you counted the (horrifically) aborted baby girls.

Is that out of line?

Largest empty city, along with empty malls.

And then they will tear it down again and rebuild it.

GDP to infinity and beyond!

Over the last nineteen years, you and I have had the distinct displeasure of watching the United States commit suicide.

Until China is that stupid, no other nation will eclipse it.

Kruschev was right. He merely had the wrong nation in mind.

Truth be told, I guess we didn’t sell China the rope. We stood on a chair. We bought it’s rope and placed it around our own neck. And then we watched as our leaders kicked the chair out from under us.

The New York Metro Area is smaller than Wales, not twice the size of Wales, and it contains a more-or-less "continuous megacity" of 20 million.
