NEW YORK – A judge sentenced the first Guantanamo detainee to have a U.S. civilian trial to life in prison Tuesday, saying anything he suffered at the hands of the CIA and others "pales in comparison to the suffering and the horror" caused by the bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998.

U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan sentenced Ahmed Ghailani to life, calling the attacks "horrific" and saying the deaths and damage they caused far outweighs "any and all considerations that have been advanced on behalf of the defedndant." He also ordered Ghailani to pay a $33 million fine.

Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, the first Guantanamo detainee to have faced a U.S. civilian trial, is pictured in this undated FBI photograph obtained June 9, 2009. U.S. prosecutors on January 7, 2011 urged a judge to sentence Ghailani to life in prison, and said the Tanzanian terrorism suspect had asked for leniency because he was tortured. A U.S. jury found Ghailani, 36, not guilty of all but one charge in November following a five-week trial in New York. REUTERS/FBI/Handout/Files

Exactly! This piece of human garbage should have been marched behind the building and summarily executed on the spot... A few instances like this piped on TV would steeply curb this barbaric behavior.

Worse yet, it's unlikely we would have ever captured him were it not for the WOT. Left viewed it as a "nuisance attack," as Kerry had said during the 2004 campaign.

The military would have convicted him of murder and then put a needle in his arm making him hold his breath forever.

I wonder where he will get the $33,000,000 to pay the fine? Maybe Holder will help.

Too bad he wasn't convicted on the other more than 200 charges including murder...then he really would have been in trouble. (sarcasm)

We are lucky that he wasn't acquitted altogether, though I am happy this POS will rot in a federal prison. I hope he faces Mecca when he sits on his toilet.

In all the new reports, I’m not hearing “without the possibility of parole.” Is that just supposed to be understood?

Kerry is excreble too.

Thousands of lives were unutterably brought to sorrow, through loss of life and maiming by this man.

I guess Kerry considers that a “nuisance”.

The problem is, the CIA's torture budget is far too low.
