Iowa House OKS requiring photo ID to vote
Mason City Globe Gazette ^ | 1.27.11 | James Q. Lynch

DES MOINES - Despite Democratic objections that it was a "solution in search of a problem," the Iowa House approved requiring Iowans to show a photo ID to vote.

"This is a bill created to create a problem," Rep. Beth Wessel-Kroeschell, D-Ames, said before the House voted 60-40 to send the measure to the Senate.

Floor manager Rep. Renee Schulte, R-Cedar Rapids, called the bill necessary to protect the integrity of elections and to make voting more uniform across the state. Now, election official may ask for a photo ID. HF 95 would remove that subjectivity by requiring everyone to show their ID.

Democrats said House File 95, which is modeled after Indiana's law that has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, should be called a voter suppression act.

"Voting is a right. It is not a privilege. It is a right," said Rep. Mary Gaskill, D-Ottumwa, a former county commissioner of elections. "If a person goes into vote, does not have a photo ID and cannot devote the time and expense to acquiring one, their right to vote has been denied."

Rights come with responsibility, said Rep. Gary Worthan, R-Storm Lake.

"If you're not willing to accept that responsibility, maybe put in a little effort on your part to get a photo ID, study the issues, register, that doesn't say a whole lot about you interest in your government and what's going on around you," Worthan said.

If we can get this signed by the Gov., our new GOP Secretary of State will have some good ammo to stop the unions busing in votes like they did in '08 to Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and other large metropolitan areas.

Let’s hope this goes national. I can’t imagine why anyone would want it to be otherwise.

Texas Senate also passed something like that.

No more bringing a utility bill as ID on election day!

Texas just got a photo ID passed in the State Senate. With the Texas House at 101 - 49 GOP advantage it should be passed, signed by the Governor and the law before the end of this year.

Have to get it past King Grand-Stall in the Senate before Gov B. can sign it into law.

SCOTUS has been crystal clear on this issue. There is no “right” to vote. States are, or were, free to set their own qualifications to cast a ballot.

What poor person cant get a state ID?

I can damn well guarantee you that if it’s needed to get their welfare cash, they would be camped out in front of the SOS to make sure they had one then.

Lucky you. Here in NC, all you have to do is know the name and address.

All they’d have to do is give up 2 or 3 packs of cigs in a year’s time and they could save enough to pay for one. I think they are still under $10.

Thank God some grown ups are back in control in DM. There is only one reason for anyone to claim it is not necessary to provide a photo ID to vote. You don’t think Dims want to make it easy to commit voter fraud, do you? Nah, can’t be.

Well, so how many voter ID laws have been shot down by federal judges? Georgia as an example? I was talking generically. How many laws on voting are being shot down by federal judges is my point.

The leftists always get pushed into the corner on this one and their last line of rationale is mooing about the pooooor that can't get to the govt office to apply for the card and get their photo taken.

Ummmmm...problem solved. Every county should have one or two police, fire, meter readers, etc. that go to the pooooor voter's house and give them their ap and take their picture.

No picture ID, no vote. I can't believe we are still arguing about this stupidity. On the other hand, Barry can't even come up with his BC...so this is just par for the course. Uggggh.
