Weapons were recovered from the bodies of the dead men.

Lahore police chief Aslam Tareen told the AP news agency that the American was being questioned by the police and might be charged with both murder and illegally carrying a weapon: a Beretta pistol.

"Diplomatic staff usually enjoy a certain type of immunity, but I am not sure about murder," he said. "We will consult the Foreign Office and legal advisers in this regard."

Local TV showed footage of what it said was the American official's car. It had several bullet holes in the windscreen.

Yes but that’s not the way it’s seen if your an American they may be charging him with murder.

“Lahore police chief Aslam Tareen said the American was being questioned by the police and may be charged with both murder and illegally carrying a weapon: a Beretta pistol. The American shot both men after they pointed guns at him at an intersection, Tareen said.

“Diplomatic staff usually enjoy a certain type of immunity, but I am not sure about murder,” he said. “We will consult the Foreign Office and legal advisers in this regard.”

Police officer Atif Meraj later said that a murder case was officially registered against the American, and another case was registered against two other Americans for killing the pedestrian.

Possibly, but the dead pedestrian is a horse of a different color. The guys that ran him down are going to do some serious time IMHO.

I’m sure Hillary will throw her weight around and get him out of there.

Diplomatic immunity is absolute. It doesn’t matter what he is accused of, as long as the U.S. stands behind him.

I think that even Obama will find that he has little choice but to do so.

So this official kills two armed robbers attempting to murder and rob him and yet he might be charged with murder? Scratch Pakistan off the itinerary.

I suspect these were terrorists. But the American had an ‘illegal hand gun’ which was ‘unregistered’. Obama I am sure would wish to waive diplomatic immunity on this but probably won't be able to. This fellows career , however, is finished. He will be fortunate not to be forced to resign form the Foreign Service if he is FSS or FSR or just be fired if he is civil service.

I suspect that he was CIA. Registration of handguns does not apply if you have diplomatic immunity.

Broken, as opposed to being shot out?

My guess is that all the American’s involved were security personnel. Diplomats don’t carry guns and anyone who killed two attackers while under fire was probably a trained shooter.
The State Dept is pulling a Blackwater on them..trying to distance themselves from an Embassy controlled security detail.

It was my experience that under certain circumstances, Diplomatic Security Officers were armed. I know for a fact that some embassy staff in dangerous places did carry. I never did, and was pretty nervous walking or jogging by myself in Teheran or Baghdad.
