DeMint advisors: He might run in 2012 if there’s no “suitably conservative” candidate in the race

My Christmas list this year: (3) New iPad with two, count ‘em, two cameras; (2) field-level tickets to the Pro Bowl, natch; (1) Palin/DeMint primary showdown.

Winner gets the nomination, loser gets the keynote address at RINOcon. Let’s do this.

But the ground may be shifting in DeMint-world, and several of his closest advisers and political confidantes are now telling CNN that he is at least open to a presidential bid if a suitably conservative candidate fails to emerge from the early and wide-open GOP field…

“He hasn’t completely shut the door on running, and if there is a massive void in the group of candidates, who knows what could happen?,” said the adviser, who was quick to caution that there is only a five percent chance the senator will run.

Aside from Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, who is currently deciding between a presidential run and a gubernatorial bid in his home state, DeMint’s advisers are having a difficult time envisioning a candidate that he could get behind…

Peter Brown, a prominent South Carolina donor and a member of DeMint’s kitchen cabinet, predicted that DeMint could warm to the idea of a White House bid as the rest of the field takes shape. Brown said potential candidates like Romney, Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich are failing to generate any kind of broad excitement among conservatives.

That contradicts DeMint's own words.

A lot of wishful thinking going on tonight after the man said categorically “NO.”

I know DeMint is viewed as the Second Coming of Christ around here but I've always thought of him as a showboat. He talks a great game and generates headlines by doing things like boycotting CPAC but doesn't accomplish much. Where was Jim DeMint during the Bush spending binge? He was in Congress and the Senate then. This “I have to run if someone else doesn't meet my test” is ego and showboating.

....AND IN OTHER NEWS, MURKOWSKI KEEPS SENATE ASSIGNMENTS.
Thursday January 27 2011
Murkowski Announces Committee Assignments for the 112th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, will continue to represent Alaska on the same Senate committees that she served on in the last Congress: Energy and Natural Resources; Appropriations; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP); and Indian Affairs.

Senate Republican leadership informed caucus members today of their committee assignments for the 112th Congress.

“These are four of the most critical committees in the United States Senate, particularly as their responsibilities and areas of jurisdiction affect the State of Alaska, so I was glad to keep my membership on these panels,” Murkowski said.

Subcommittee assignments on the Appropriations and HELP committees, and committee and subcommittee ranking member slots, will be determined in the near future. Murkowski is the ranking Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Brown said potential candidates like Romney, Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich are failing to generate any kind of broad excitement among conservatives.”

Demint would have a hill to climb about twice as steep as Mt. McKinley were he to run. It would cost him 100 million dollars just to get a sliver of name recognition.

Google hits:

Jim Demint: 847,000
Mitt Romney: 1,690,000
Mike Huckabee: 1,550,000
Sarah Palin:23,500,000

George Bush:23,300,000

“Sarah Palin and WTF” get 1.5 million hits, twice as many as Jim Demint. He is not running, but if he did, he would be no more than a nuisance.

“Sarah Palin: 23,500,000”, more than a recent two term President.

According to Peter Brown, Palin is failing to generate any excitement. What a hoot these dupes are!

DeMint and Pence have removed themselves from the running in the same day. I was hoping at least one of them would jump in. Without them, the GOP has a very weak field.

Is there some reason that you left Representative Michele Bachmann out of your equation?

Google Hits:

Michele Bachmann ..... 29,600,000

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=michele+bachmann

Incidentally, Barack Obama = 63,300,000 and Hillary Clinton = 13,000,000 search results.

“Is there some reason that you left Representative Michele Bachmann out of your equation?

Yes. She is not a serious candidate for Senator from Minnesota let alone President of the United States.

“Google Hits:

Michele Bachmann ..... 29,600,000”

Well, if you use quotes to screen out the numerous situations where Michele is in one part of the article and Bachmann is in the other (and it is not Michelle Bachmann the author is talking about), she gets 887,000 hits.

http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#sclient=psy&hl=en&site=webhp&q=%22michele+bachmann%22&aq=0&aqi=g4g-o1&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=b92d339172125935

Using the quotes with “Sarah Palin” yields 32,400,000.

http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#hl=en&sugexp=ldymls&xhr=t&q=sarah+palin+alaska&cp=13&pf=p&sclient=psy&site=webhp&aq=0&aqi=&aql=&oq=%22sarah+Palin%22&pbx=1&fp=b92d339172125935

“Incidentally, Barack Obama = 63,300,000 and Hillary Clinton = 13,000,000 search results.”

Barack Obama is the current Presiedent of the U.S in case you haven’t noticed. I would expect him to have more hits than any politician.

This thread was about the GOP nomination. Are either Obama or Hillary contemplating a run for the GOP nod? Do you have some info you want to share with us?

Trying to inflate Bachmann’s Google hits by not using quotes to advance the notion that she generates more interest or support than Sarah Palin is just tomfoolery at its worst. No one in their right minds believes that.

You don’t need a statistic to prove it. I can’t think of a single memorable thing Bachmann said the other night, and I bet you can’t either. Palin’s WTF puncture of Obama’s SOTU balloon is all over the internet and the Blogosphere.

The only thing that the few people who saw Bachmann’s speech remember about it is that she didn’t seem to know where the camera was.
