LAPD Chief Charles Beck says Jeffrey Stenroos lied about the shooting that shut down 9 schools.
LOS ANGELES (KTLA) The LAUSD police officer who said he was shot and wounded in a confrontation with an armed suspect outside a Woodland Hills high school is under arrest Thursday night, accused of making up the whole story, according to LAPD Chief Charles Beck.
LAPD detectives arrested Officer Jeffrey Stenroos on one felony count of filing a false police report.
On January 19, 2011, the LAPD responded to and launched an extensive investigation after Officer Stenroos reported a burglary suspect attempted to murder him by shooting him in the chest while he was on patrol near El Camino High School in the San Fernando Valley.
The police response was massive. The incident prompted a manhunt that included 350 police and deputies, and the lockdown of nine different schools in the area.
Residents were unable to return to their homes and more than 9,000 LAUSD students were locked in the classrooms for hours without access to food or bathrooms.
After the incident, Stenroos was said to have been saved by his bullet-proof vest. Stenroos reportedly had a large bruise on his left chest that was supposedly caused by an assailant's bullet.
Beck would not comment on the Stenroos' injury.
According to Chief Beck, "the current state of the investigation refutes Stenroos initial account of the incident and we are now certain that there is no outstanding suspect in this shooting."
Beck added that detectives worked tirelessly to ensure the case was thoroughly investigated and the community was never at risk.
Detectives followed up on more than 350 clues, conducted a number of neighborhood canvasses, made hundreds of community contacts and distributed countless Community Alert Notices in hopes of gathering any valuable leads in the case.
While I understand the media and the publics intense interest in this investigation, and the desire for answers to the many questions that will be asked with this new development of the Officers arrest, I cannot provide more detailed information at this time.
In the meantime, Los Angeles Police Protective League president released a statement calling Stenroos, "an embarrassment to law enforcement."
You’ve got a good point...However when it comes to shooting a cop, then throw into the mix schools and students, and you’re going to get a massive response....Just the way it is nowadays...
and therein lies the problem [a BIG one anyhow] with our Republic...
Id be curious to know if, or how many people were forcibly detained for tryin to get home, or leave the skool...???
also prolly sucked runnin a cash register on the other side of town...
Probably thousands...I heard it was a nightmare, with 3000 cops looking for the alleged shooter.
No one in the area heard a gun shot...
Hmmm...
He shot his vest at an earlier time and tossed down a spent casing?
lol...
RE Teeth/Dr. Lecter:
Well, you do what ya gotta do to survive, brother...
And it’s great with Fava beans, garlic, and butter...
Ha!
Now it's, OMG the cops totally over reacted....
lol..
“..First it’s OMG, they’re shooting school cops in LA....What an evil place!
Now it’s, OMG the cops totally over reacted.... “
And now it’s “OMG - The Cops are Intentionally Shooting THEMSELVES and blaming SOMEONE ELSE - and causing HAVOC to the community!!!”
BTW, this is not the first time a cop has shot themselves, Like firefighters starting fires, like women that scream rape that weren't....It's happened many times in the past...
The good part here was investigators suspected the cop almost from the beginning, which led to his arrest within 2 or 3 days of the incident.
“...BTW, this is not the first time a cop has shot themselves,...”
This is just another example of why I think we need tighter “Cop Control” laws - close off the “loopholes” once and for all!!! You know - something on the order of:
1. Fingerprinting, Mug Shot, And Registration, and every 3 years it must be renewed - at cost to the individual.
2. Mandatory “Public Servant Identification (PSID)” Card. If he can’t produce it on demand, at all times, 365/24/7, he gets immediately arrested, sorta like the FOID in Neu Joisey and Chicago, Illinois.
3. Mandatory 3-Month Waiting (”cooling off”) Period before receiving his/her Badge, weapon, and uniform.
4. Holster Size Restriction - no large-capacity holsters or Sam Brown Duty Belts for big firearms for these guys.
5. Immediate Mental Screening Tests, along with signed, notarized affidavits from no less than five (5) trusted references (after THEY’VE been background checked, of course) and his/her local Police Chief or Sheriff.
You see where I’m going here, I’ll assume...
