An array of Republican heavyweights who backed Mitt Romney’s 2008 presidential bid are not yet committed to - and in some cases, downright skeptical of - the former Massachusetts governor’s all-but-certain 2012 campaign.
In each of the traditional early states, top Romney supporters from the last campaign tell POLITICO that they’re hesitant to get behind the nearest thing the GOP has to a frontrunner. His difficulties are particularly acute in Iowa and South Carolina, where his former enthusiasts say they have not heard from him, believe he may be intent on downplaying the states in his second White House run and are openly flirting with his potential rivals.
But those two states – where Romney had difficulties with their socially conservative electorate in 2008 – aren’t the only ones where the former governor is losing support.
Former Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), the top elected official in the Granite State whose endorsement of Romney in 2008 was seen as a pivotal moment, said in an interview that he’s firmly undecided about who he’ll back in next year’s primary.

It annoys me to no end that he's been hanging around with the obvious intent of running again, as if he's going to do anything other than destroy GOP attempts to regain the white house.
I don't understand FReepers who blame the party for the nominee. The party cannot really stop anybody from running.
The nominee is selected by the members of the party, not by its leaders. The only obstacle are the open primary states where independents and liberals are allowed to vote in OUR primary!
THAT is what the party leaders need to work on!
I'm in the Palin camp but I'm not convinced that she necessarily wants to run. I think she would be fine stepping aside for some right thinking individual.

I honestly don’t get Romney. He’s a smart man who has seasoned advisers. They have to know that there is no path to victory with Romneycare hung around his neck.

Believe it Palin is going to run. She has been getting her ducks in a row for the last 18 months. Why she is so savvy is that she does it under the radar, without fanfare and very methodically. Quite the opposite of how the MSM tries to portray her.
The party CAN determine who can run with the Republican label. But the party is run by RINOs who agree more with Rats than conservatives.
I hope you're right because Sarah would be the first Presidential candidate since Reagan for whom I was really excited to vote.
As long as the country is moving in the right direction, I don't think that Sarah Palin cares whether she is President or not. This lack of personal ambition is what could cause her to let someone else be the conservative flagbearer. IMO it is this lack of personal political ambition which confuses the MSM. They don't know what makes Sarah tick.

I am NOT voting for another empty suit appointed by the Good Old Boys caucus of the GOP as my President. McCain and Dole were pathetic and uninspiring and, God love him, George H. W. Bush only got in the first time because he was riding on some outstanding coat tails. W. got elected because, frankly, Gore was an even worse pick for the Democrats in 2000.
Now we need someone to unseat Obama and another lukewarm empty suit isn’t going to do the trick. Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, maybe even Jan Brewer...those are the kinds of people who are going to be able to unseat Obama.
Really, it was an exciting Bill Clinto who ran an outstanding campaign who unseated George H. W. Bush in 1992 and with Romney we’re proposing to run a Bush against the Democrats Clinton. Yeah, that’ll turn out just great.
So, you think that without Romneycare, an anti-gun, pro-abortion, pro-queer agenda, RINO will get conservative votes in a november election?
Nominate that dumb bastard and the RATS will get 70% of the vote in 2012!
Between Romneycare, being pro-abortion, and the fact he lost to MCCAIN, he should be automatically disqualified.
Cain supported Romney in 2008.

Mitt gives me a fit. I wouldn’t say hello to him if I passed him in the street much less vote for that idiot.
The reason I supported Romney in the 2008 primaries was three fold: he had public, private, and non-profit sector experience...he was able to win in a Democrat state, he was able to find success in the private arena, and he took over a messed up Olympic program and turned those into a winner.
Though Cain, AFAIK, doesn’t have the public executive experience Rom had, I think his ability to be voted as a leader of his peers (IIRC he was Pres of the National Restaurant Association) and his work as an entrepreneur make him an ideal candidate—someone who knows what it is like to build a business, run one, and be in charge of a large organization.

The reason Romney was able to win in Mass. was because he was liberal through and through, rabidly pro abort, pro homo, pro illegals, pro everything that was liberal. When it became politically necessary for him he did a complete flip flop on every issue.
I personally don't care who you supported in '08. that was then and I hope you are not or will not support him in '12. You like Cain, I do too but he had questionable judgment in '08 concerning Romney and in my opinion you did too but you're not running for president.
Right now I'm loving the thought of Palin's candidacy but there are other good people out there whom I could support. I'm by no means ready to say, "Palin or nobody'.
I want to see Obama or whoever the dem candidate is, go down in flames but not at the cost of electing Romney. In that regard I'm like so many others here, I will never vote for Romney, no matter what.
