Indiana considers immigration bill

INDIANAPOLIS — A battle over Arizona-style immigration enforcement is coming to the Indiana Statehouse this week.

Supporters of the crackdown say states need to do something about illegal immigration if the federal government isn't going to tackle the issue. Opponents say what's being offered in state legislatures would be expensive to enforce while not doing much to solve the problem.

A proposal from Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel, is at the center of the debate in the General Assembly.

His Senate Bill 590 is scheduled for a hearing Wednesday in the Senate Committee on Pensions and Labor. He said in a news release that he expects an overflow crowd.

"It's hard for me to get past the idea that some people think it's OK to turn a blind eye to the lawlessness, the exploitation of cheap labor for profit and the exploitation of human beings that's going on today in the state of Indiana," Delph said in an interview. "I consider it modern-day slavery. I'm gonna fight it. I think it's wrong."

Allert Brown-Gort, an immigration policy expert at the University of Notre Dame's Institute for Latino Studies, said immigrants account for only about 5 percent of Indiana's population. And, nationally, about three out of every four immigrants in the United States is here legally."One of the biggest problems with the Arizona debate," he said, "is it equates being Latino with being an immigrant. It equates being an immigrant with being illegal. It equates being here illegally with being a criminal. And it basically tells people they're not wanted here."

It equates being an immigrant with being illegal that created that concept by refering to illegals simply as immigrants, so many is the time we hear immigrants arrested and dig deeper into the story they then include undocumented at some point. They abused the word immigrant ,have only themselves to blame.Too, bad

It equates being here illegally with being a criminal.

That's because it"s true. Entering the Country illegally is a federal crime with a sentence of 6 months in prison for the first offense. Do it again, which is most common, it's a felony with 2 years in prison.

There's a whole lot more to it than just cops asking for ID

Pretty common sense stuff

Delph's S.B. 590 would require police officers who stop anyone for breaking a law or ordinance to ask for proof that the person is here legally if there is "reasonable suspicion" to believe otherwise.

The bill would also require the Indiana Office of Management and Budget to estimate how much illegal immigration costs the state and send Congress a written request to be reimbursed for that amount.

There is also a provision barring state and local governments from using a language other than English for correspondence.

S.B. 590 also would strengthen penalties for businesses that employ illegal immigrants.

Companies would be prohibited from knowingly hiring them, and the state could take away a business license from any employer with three violations.

Employers that use the federal E-Verify system to confirm whether a person is legally employable would be immune from the penalties.

Bulls**t...Lefties in the media and pro-illegal scumbag alien lobby are the ones who equate legal immigration with illegal immigration. They do it to skew the argument into something it isn't.

"It equates being here illegally with being a criminal."

Duh! What part of "illegal" does this dumbs**t not understand? "Illegal" means whoever is doing the illegal activity IS A FREAKIN' CRIMINAL!!!

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

Please tell my why the loons who support the continuing lawlessness inherent in illegal immigration are mainly college professors with hyphenated last names? While the Republicans are considering wholesale cuts in Federal spending, they should also consider shuttering all our colleges and universities for three or four years and force a$$holes like this guy to go out and try his hand at “real work.”

I was watching cops tonight and everybody they believe there is “reasonable suspicion” to believe otherwise, they asked everyone for id’s, the ones who didn’t have an id took off running.

What is this a calculus course? I haven't seen so many equations since HS.

"And it basically tells people they're not wanted here." Finally something in this article I can agree with!

I hope the employer based sanctions are enacted and enforced. I would like to see local businesses in my area raided. Can anyone explain how every single cook at my local Chinese restaurant is of Hispanic origin, and why except perhaps for the owner, everyone is Hispanic? Could any legal experts here tell us what we common folks can do - can we call US immigration to suggest a raid on a local business?

Allert Brown-Gort sounds like a modern day slaver to me. The law should have a section setting out punishments for aiding in the creation of slavery, then define it in accordance with what Allert Brown-Cort is doing.

Then stick his tail in jail and see if his Leftwingtard buddies want to fight it out in court.

Leftwingtardism does require that many be slaves on behalf of the few so this isn't surprising.

The usual "immigrant equals illegal" straw-man can be ignored, of course. The rest is deliberate statistical trickery. How many of the software engineers from Indian working in Silicon Valley, and their wives and kids, are here illegally? Knock them out of the equation and what's left is certainly going to be less than his "75% are legal" sleight of hand.

Hey, we watched Cops, too. We call it “Bad Boys” LOL. How about the kid who was arrested for practically throwing his bike on an officer and running... had a gun and drugs in his pants... and told his grandmother and another woman who came to the police car to speak to him before he was hauled away that it was the fault of the “whitey, racist cops”!!

All I had to say was... where was his father???!!!

Ummm....John McCain, George W Bush, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Mel Martinez, Newt Gingrich, Lindsey Graham, FNC Special Report All Stars, Rick Perry.....they....they do not have hyphenated last names. They are all RINOs who support Illegal Alien Amnesty

Problem is that there are too many GOP peeing in America’s tent....they support Illegal Alien Amnesty, and refuse to enforce our immigration laws. Its not just Liberal Democrats
