Chick-Fil-A Says It's Dropping Its Support For Anti-Gay Marriage Groups

Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy says the company is dropping its support for anti-gay marriage groups. The announcement comes after gay website GoodAsYou.org blogged about the chicken restaurant's sponsorship of a marriage seminar closely associated with the anti-gay marriage group Pennsylvania Family Institute. In a two-minute-twenty-seven-second video message released nearly three weeks ago, Cathy denied that the company's donation was an endorsement of its values. “Let me be clear, Chick-Fil-A serves all people and values all people,” Cathy said. “Providing food to these events, or any event, is not an endorsement of the mission, political stance or motives of this or any other organization. Any suggestion otherwise is just inaccurate,” he added. The company reversed course on Saturday after the New York Times wrote about the fallout from the incident. “The company's Christian culture and its strict hiring practices, which require potential operators to discuss their marital status and civic and church involvement, have attracted controversy before,” the paper wrote. In a statement released Saturday, Cathy discussed the company's new stand. “Chick-Fil-A has a long history of trying to encourage and strengthen marriages and families, both within our Chick-Fil-A system and with our customers,” Cathy said. “Chick-Fil-A's Corporate Purpose is 'To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us, and to have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-Fil-A.' As a result, we will not champion any political agendas on marriage and family. This decision has been made, and we understand the importance of it.” But Cathy added that the company would “continue to offer resources to strengthen marriages and families.” “To do anything different would be inconsistent with our purpose and belief in Biblical principles,” he said.

So it has become a matter of PR to listen to the gay advocates. . .

Oh look - another example of ‘gay rights’ being nothing more than curtailing the rights of others.

In PA, they forced a fitness center owner to sell his business, because he dared contribute to Rick Santorum’s senate campaign. These are very very dangerous radicals.

Okay, I just read this article 3 times and I do not see where Cathy statements indicate he has “changed course” anywhere, as the author has suggested.

I wonder now how many non-gay’s will start boycotting them? Are there more gays who would go there than those of us who won’t?

Why would any non-gays boycott Chik-Fil-A?

I guess this means they will now start opening on Sundays because they are no longer a Christian business.

Cathy said. “Chick-Fil-A's Corporate Purpose is 'To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us, and to have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-Fil-A.' As a result, we will not champion any political agendas on marriage and family.

I don't see how the second sentence follows from the first. The wreckers of traditional values and the non glorifiers of God have found a friendly arena in the Political World.

So, they get a win by default? Sad.

CFA is dropping its support for anti-gay marriage groups. Therefore my question was: are there more gay people out there that would go to CFA than non-gay? If gay groups targeted CFA and CFA dropped it’s support of anti-gay marriage groups, then it goes that non-gay people would boycott them in return.

You’re either in business Ir your not. When you have your own small business, fine to make a statement. But when you are responsible for the lives of thousands of employees, it’s a different thing.

"Okay, I just read this article 3 times and I do not see where Cathy statements indicate he has “changed course” anywhere, as the author has suggested."

You can find the entire press-release here. No, he's not changing course, but he is saying that the company was incorrectly identified in media reports as "anti-gay". He says that he and his family are pro-biblical marriage, but he "love and respect anyone who disagrees", yada, yada, yada.

So no, he's not "changing his position", he's saying his company's position was slightly misrepresented in the media.

As an aside, I HATE it when press stories only characterize a person's press statement, rather than providing a link to the statement in its entirety. It drives me crazy.
