It seems the state of New Mexico is taking after its neighboring state.
New Mexico governor Susana Martinez said Monday that New Mexico is no longer an illegal immigrant sanctuary state, issuing an order to officially reverse the state’s status.
Ms. Martinez ordered the reversal of the state’s “sanctuary status,” which prohibited law enforcement from asking criminal suspects about their citizenship. The move aligns the state with Arizona, which passed a law mandating officials inquire about an individual’s immigration status.
A number of immigrant-rights group protested the move, saying it will allow for discriminatory practices.
The move makes New Mexico the latest state to implement an immigration reform system similar to the one put in place in Arizona. A number of states, including California, are considering similar laws in the wake of increased calls for immigration reform.
California considers Arizona-style immigration law; initiative likely
It seems the state of the California is the latest state to consider implementing an Arizona-style immigration law.
Just days after President Obama said the country should, “take on, once and for all the issue of illegal immigration,” California state lawmakers will considering an immigration law similar to that seen in Arizona.
Republican Assemblyman Tim Donnelly has introduced a measure similar to that seen in Arizona.
Under Mr. Donnelly’s proposal, undocumented immigrants without the proper documentation would be susceptible to criminal prosecution. Local police would also be required to check the papers of detained individuals if they reason to believe the person is in the country illegally.
The measure comes as the nation continues is debate over immigration reform and border security. Lawmakers in a number of states have introduced or passed similar measures, even as Arizona’s controversial immigration law remains under challenge by the Department of Justice.
The California Arizona-style immigration law, however, will face challenges from a Democratically-controlled Assembly, which is leading a number of supporters to launch an initiative aimed at place the measure on the 2012 ballot.

HALLELUJAH! May she be the first of many governors/mayors to do so.
And wouldn’t it be cool if we enforced FEDERAL immigration laws, uniformly and vigorously, in all 57 states?
You can bet your mortgage payment that the Rats in the Legislature and Gov. Moonbeam will do everything they can to keep such an initiative off the ballot. And failing that, you can count on the state courts to throw it out if it passes.
Yes, it's a decidedly good thing to discriminate against criminal immigrants.

It’s about time! I wish Indiana would do the same thing. Everytime I eat in a Mexican or Chinese restaurant, and the waiter can barely understand me, other than a number, I want to ask them for proof of citizenship or a green card.
Glad to see this. If Kalifornia does something we could start to cure the problem.

Arizona-style immigration law results in clash with Gov. Rick Scott
A top Florida Republican state official said earlier this week that the state should not consider implementing an Arizona-style immigration law.
Adam Putnam, the newly installed commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, opposes Florida Governor Rick Scott’s support of an immigration under consideration.
“Florida is the capital of the Western Hemisphere. We’re a destination for investment capital, international tourists, international research and development and from Latin America in particular,” Mr. Putnam said recently. “We have to be very careful about how we approach this issue.”
Mr. Putnam added, “cutting and pasting the Arizona law is not what’s right for Florida.”
The comment comes as the Florida Senate considers legislation aimed at addressing the issue. Mr. Scott, who campaigned on implementing an Arizona-style immigration law, will likely support the proposal should it pass.
A number of states are considering similar measures after the state of Arizona signed a controversial immigration bill into law. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer defended her signing of the law, sparking a national debate on immigration and border security.

Mark Steyn was saying the other day that if we have to bail a state out, they should be deemed to have lost the ability to responsibly govern themselves, and should be demoted to the status of Territory until the situation is corrected. I like it.
