Gov. Susana Martinez orders Arizona-style immigration reform
The State Column ^ | Feb. 1, 2011 | The State Column

Posted on 02/01/2011 7:04:43 AM PST by AuntB

It seems the state of New Mexico is taking after its neighboring state.

New Mexico governor Susana Martinez said Monday that New Mexico is no longer an illegal immigrant sanctuary state, issuing an order to officially reverse the state’s status.

Ms. Martinez ordered the reversal of the state’s “sanctuary status,” which prohibited law enforcement from asking criminal suspects about their citizenship. The move aligns the state with Arizona, which passed a law mandating officials inquire about an individual’s immigration status.

A number of immigrant-rights group protested the move, saying it will allow for discriminatory practices.

The move makes New Mexico the latest state to implement an immigration reform system similar to the one put in place in Arizona. A number of states, including California, are considering similar laws in the wake of increased calls for immigration reform.

Albuquerque instituted a similar law about a year ago. They stationed ICE personnel in the booking area of the metro jail and questioned EVERYONE arrested about immigration status.

The “profiling” whiners got no traction because everyone was questioned, and it was by the Feds not the locals.

The policy has been a great success, netting 30 illegals (arrested for a variety of offenses) in the first week.

Mark Steyn was saying the other day that if we have to bail a state out, they should be deemed to have lost the ability to responsibly govern themselves, and should be demoted to the status of Territory until the situation is corrected. I like it.

I assume that means that they would get no (voting) U.S. Reps, no Senators, and no Electoral College votes for the duration. However, they would still required to pay taxes (unlike some territories) if for no other reason than to pay back the bailout.

Ugh. Please, let’s not use the word nipple and that... individual in proximity. Nipple is such a nice word, I’d hate to get it ruined.

Very nice, thanks for the link!

Martinez says in a press release:

“This order takes the handcuffs off of New Mexico’s law enforcement officers in their mission to keep our communities safe. The criminal justice system should have the authority to determine the immigration status of all criminals, regardless of race or ethnicity, and report illegal immigrants who commit crimes to federal authorities.”

That is exactly correct. He even spelled that out. He said there is precedence for this. Newfoundland became a Dominion in the British Empire with self-determination and self-government, but eventually voluntarily reverted to the status of a. . . well, apparently it was called a de jure dominion, run by a six member commission in 1934, eventually becoming Canada's 10th Province in 1949. The freaking lefty libs would go bananas over it, but it makes sense. There has to be a penalty. I would think that it should lose statehood for a period of 5 years at which time if it could demonstrate that it was prepared to govern responsibly, it could be readmitted to full membership in the union as a state. Same with Illinois, and I don't care if the so-called president used to live there.

I hate to bust your racist bubble. But this LATINA has what it takes. From another thread about her:

At age 17 she was an armed security guard and carries heat (or did so until she became governor). One story has her being interviewed by NBC when running for governor last year. When the technician was getting her wired for a microphone she had to caution him that she had a weapon under her belt. And it runs in the family - her great-grandfather Ortega was a general in Pancho Villa's army.

And if you say her husband is the Hispanic, i.e., Martinez is his surname and not her maiden name you are wrong again. Martinez is her surname her husband's name is Chuck Franco.

CA did do “something” back in the ‘90s, Prop 187.

A federal judge threw us under the bus.

Went to a Chinese restaurant with a fellow engineer who was born and raised in Bejing. A Chinese waitress came and had an accent so bad that my friend started talking to her in Mandarin Chinese. All of a sudden, the accent was gone and the waitress said she does not understand Chinese. Seems she was fourth gen. student at the local university.
