Washington driver’s license proposal called racist, anti-immigrant

OLYMPIA – A legislative hearing over a proposal to make driver’s license applicants give the state a Social Security number and a verifiable residence was abruptly halted Thursday after some members of the audience called the plan racist and anti-immigrant.

Senate Transportation Chairwoman Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, ended the hearing when several people in the audience tried to shout her down over the purpose of Senate Bill 5407.

The panel had listened to a full hour of testimony, with some witnesses saying the bill would make the state safer by preventing terrorists from obtaining licenses and others who said it would make the state less safe because undocumented immigrants would still drive, but without licenses or insurance.

Haugen insisted several times the bill wasn’t about immigration: “To work in this country, you have to have a Social Security Number. We’re just asking for a Social Security number.”

When she asked Department of Licensing staff to explain how the bill would work, they said applicants would be asked for the number, as they are now. If there’s any question about residence, licensing staff must “establish whether they are lawfully present” in the state.

“So it is about immigration,” a member of the audience said loudly.

“You want to target brown people and the working poor,” said another, even louder.

Haugen told legislative security to remove those two people, which prompted other people to join in that the bill was targeting immigrants. She banged the gavel and adjourned the committee without getting the full answer from licensing staff or hearing testimony on three other bills.

The panel will return to the issue later, she said.

after some members of the audience

Are there no capitol police in that state? Do members of the audience have a veto power?

Right. In Puerto Rico - a purportedly Hispanic U.S. Territory - the DMV has always required applicants for a valid SSN, a birth certificate, and utility bills to prove residency.

And to add to this, you cannot vote without and Elections Commission photo ID, which has the same requirements as a driver license.

8 or 9 out of 10 fatal accidents in my part of central Washington involve immigrants...many of which are illegals. I am for any way to get them off the road.

I remember reading that Oregon passed a law that all applicants for licenses would have to prove legal residence. The new license applications went down by 2 thirds! ( or thereabouts).

So, da ho is saying that “brown people” don’t have a Social Security number and a verifiable residence? Now THAT’S “racist”.

After 911 it was found that virtually all the AlQaida terrorists had gotten their Virginia licenses from a nearby DMV outlet. The procedures were the old lax ones.

I strongly suspect Senate Transportation Chairwoman Mary Margaret Haugen works for AlQaida. Someone from HS ought to get over there and interrogate her thoroughly ~ it's simply not believable that there remain people in positions of authority who are that IGNANT ~ just unbelievable. Therefore she must be a terrorist, or a terrorist sympathizer.

Just moved to Memphis, in order to switch my driver's license from WI to TN, I had to show my Social Security card, 2 proofs of established residency, my prior state's actual driver's record, a non-photocopy (original) of state issued birth certificate, and a copy of my 401K Statement???? WTF was up with that?

Plenty of brown, poor, white, hispanic, and asians in line with me. Seemed that the rule was pretty evenly applied to everyone!

These people need psychiatric help. Perhaps they forgot to take their meds. Whatever, their nonsense does not and should not count.

The laws only apply to the American citizens who pay the bills to support these intruders. I’m sick of spineless politicians who are afraid of offending everyone but the American tax payer.

I think the 401K statement is a bit much, but yeap, that is typical identification requirements.

Classic public forum diamond pattern tactics. It’s how a few can control the debate in front of many.

So what you're saying is, Barry Sotero could not acquire a drivers license in TN, but he can be the president.

Nice.

I think you misread the article. I don't blame you, because it's not really written very clearly.

The Democrat in question apparently supports the idea of trying to make drivers licenses unavailable to illegal aliens, incredible as that may seem.

It was the (presumed) illegals in the audience who were disrupting the meeting, because they want to keep their licenses.

Maybe everyone should start refusing to give their social security numbers when applying for a driver’s license.

That's right; ANY effort at Voter ID or proof of Citizenship is racist and anti-immigrant to the Leftists. Their voterbase consists of welfare recipients, felons, illegals, dead, and a host of other societal mis-fits.

Calling yourself a fellow Democrat means don't drop the soap in the shower.....
