WASHINGTON -President Barack Obama says the United States intends to formally recognize Southern Sudan as a sovereign, independent state in July.
Obama made the announcement Monday in a statement congratulating the people of Southern Sudan for "a successful and inspiring" referendum.
Election officials said Monday that more than 98 percent of ballots in the Jan. 9 vote were for independence. That means South Sudan will become the world's newest country in July.
Obama said that after decades of conflict the image of millions of southern Sudanese voters deciding their own future was an inspiration to the world. He also said it's another step forward in Africa's long journey toward justice and democracy.

I don’t know much about Somaliland. All the Somalis we have here in central Ohio who mention their origins come from Puntland.
It does seem odd that Obama would recognize South Sudan. Forty years ago, Biafra (a Christian part of Nigeria, which is also divided by Islam and G-d) was left for dead. I’m thinking that food supplies will be turned back at the border. But we shall see.
I just assumed that he recognized South Sudan as a green light to start sending boatloads of our tax dollars over there in the form of “aid”. You know, spreading the wealth around...
Well, first that “self-sustaining” stuff has got to go. What’s wrong with them? Can’t they at least have a military coup and some bloodshed in the streets? How about a man-made famine against a tribal minority or two? Then O might recognize them, and send over the usual shipload of food supplies to rot in a warehouse, attract rats, and start an epidemic.

They’ve already seen more than their share of blood shed, slave raids, and genocidal campaigns. And they have oil, which is bound to attract terrorists and border disputes, going hand in hand. Wait ‘til they “discover” some obscure Islamic tribe and “learn” how the Christian majority is “oppressing” them. Then the fun will start all over again.

Actually, I believe “Sudan” comes from the Arabic word “aswad,” which means “black”. So “Sudan” is Arabic for “blacklandia”.
