The first picture has been released of Meryl Streep playing Baroness Thatcher in The Iron Lady, the forthcoming Hollywood film about the former British prime minister's life.

The biopic, which also stars Jim Broadbent as Lady Thatcher's husband Sir Denis, began filming at the end of January.

It is being made by Pathe and Film4 and is directed by British director Phyllida Lloyd, who is best known for her theatre work.

Streep, one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, was seen as one of the few women capable of convincingly playing Lady Thatcher.

However, producers faced concerns over how an American would be received playing the part, and suggestions that the role should have gone go to a British actress.

The film will focus mainly on the period immediately prior to the Falklands war. . . .

British thespians had better pray Hollywood doesn't retaliate.

My choice would have been Emma Thompson.

I don’t know much about the Iron Lady but Meryl Streep really can’t pull off her looks, at least not in that picture. She looks like she just saw a tarantula or something while the Baroness looks steely and confident.

Nothing worse than Liberals ACTING like they are a hero conservative

I totally resent hollywood scum-sucking progressive liberal America haters who think they are great for doing what they do in the first place. I resent even more when such an anti-conservative hateful actor gets to play the part of real hero who stood up for everything that actor was mostly against.

I read about this movie. It portrays Thatcher as a dementia riddle old bat who regrets all the decisions she made in the past. It is upsetting a lot of people, including Maggie herself. A real smear job.

My choice would’ve been Bo Derek. At least she’s a conservative.

"My choice would have been Emma Thompson."

Both Emma and Meryl are lfetists whose politics are far from those of Mrs. Thatcher's.

This is going to be a 'Hatchet Job' on her and Reagan as well which is why I have not spent a $ on a movie in the theater in years.

I predict a box office failure. Thatcher fans won’t go see it because they know it’ll trash Thatcher. Thatcher haters won’t go see it because why would they see a movie about someone they don’t like.

I would have gone with a British actress. As soon as I saw Streep had the role, I knew I wouldn’t want to see it.

Helen Mirren was astounding as Queen Elizabeth II. I wonder if she could have played Lady Thatcher? That said, Streep has an uncanny ability for morphing accents of every type imaginable (check her out in her early films playing a Pole, a South African, etc). She is a pro and perhaps the best actress in Hollywood. I believe she will do a great job personally.

I thought the same thing. I wondered if she could really portray, with honesty, this great woman.

Just what we need, a botoxed "Baroness"... Streep can't hold a candle to the real deal.

Is there any female conservative actress in England left?
