Magee originally faced felony charges, which were dropped when prosecutors determined she did not purposely try to avoid paying her taxes. A jury convicted her of gross misdemeanors. A Department of Revenue investigator testified that Magee has a "long-term pattern" of not filing returns, having failed to do so from 1991 to 2003 as well. In those years, the state filed "commissioner-filed returns." Attorneys argued whether or not Magee was still required to file returns.

“the highest calling of the lawyer is the call to fight against tryanny and government-sponsored or tolerated oppression.”

I think her confusion is entirely understandable. She probably thinks she’s owed reparations for slavery; hence government should be sending HER checks rather than the other way around.
