Kill it.

They should use common sense and tighten immigration and profile instead.

It was a good day for freedom and liberty.

A ‘show’ vote. It’ll be back for a majority vote.

A terribly convoluted bill- even more than the original was which was hard enough to understand.

The press has done a great job of hiding Obama’s work on tyhis bill! They deserve a big hand from their socialist brothers. Obama is all for civil liberty you know...

I’ll say this to those who think that it’s a good thing that the PATRIOT ACT is now expiring: Let’s pray to God you guys (and gals) are right that this had no effect on our security. I personally believe that it did, though, and I am deeply worried for the safety of the country. We have no account of how many terror threats and potential acts were stopped before they had a chance of getting into the national spotlight. As for the Republicans who voted a gainst the renewal, they were not RINOS, but ideological votes. I heard it said that most believe that the bill was unconstitutional, a principle that, to me, shows that these people respect the Constitution. Although, I think they were wrong in this case.

Excellent! Good news for a change. I’ll still be shocked if they don’t find some way to resurrect this.

Uh, why did it require a 2/3 majority to pass? (And incidentally, given that requirement, the 26 Republicans made absolutely no difference to the outcome).

Probably good news by accident.

Excellent news. The debate over the Patriot Act act on the right is similar to the gun control debate on the left.

Many on both sides recognize they've been on the wrong side of the issue.

I do not trust the current administration or today's Washington bureaucracy with this kind of power.

Yes! I am extremely glad that these powers have been stripped from our would be dictator. I am extremely disappointed in the Republicans who voted almost enmass to extend Obama’s police powers. Congratulations to the Democrats who voted against this monstrosity.

Yes, GOOD!

I had a problem with Bush having that kind of authority even after 9-11...but Obama? Holder? NO MORE!

The White House on Tuesday said in a statement that it "does not object" to extending the three Patriot Act provisions until December 2011 although it "would strongly prefer" an extension until December 2013, noting that the longer timeline "provides the necessary certainty and predictability" that law enforcement agencies require while at the same time ensuring congressional oversight by maintaining a sunset

So they do understand "predictability and certainity"? Certainity is good for law enforcement agencies, bad for business?

Politically, I think this was handled perfectly by Republicans I might be open to gaining some renewed respect for them. Conservatives must stand up against big government and government intrusion on principle or we will lose the big arguments against big govt like Obamacare. The Patriot act was one of those things that was a Bush big government albatross, I am not bashing, I really respect George W. Bush, I think after 911 the Congress did a lot of over-reach just because they wanted to make sure they did everything they could to protect us. In view of recent history I think paring back on the Patriot Act is sensible, but Republicans should really be pushing now on new rules for Profiling and stronger border security.
