FORT WAYNE Despite garnering far more support in an online poll than the thicket of other suggestions, residents shouldn't expect Fort Wayne's new government center to be named after one of the city's longest tenured mayors.
Deputy Mayor Beth Malloy said naming 200 E. Berry St. the Harry Baals Government Center was "probably not" going to happen.
"We love Fort Wayne, too," she said. "We're not going to make any decisions that look bad."
The name has received 882 votes on the city's website, www.feedbackfortwayne.org as of Monday afternoon more than triple that of its nearest competitor: Eugene Johnson Memorial Center.
Johnson was the properties manager for the Allen County Public Library while it occupied the building. The city's online poll allows anyone to submit names for the building and then vote on the suggestions.

Harry Baals building unlikely
Despite garnering far more support in an online poll than the thicket of other suggestions, residents shouldn’t expect Fort Wayne’s new government center to be named after one of the city’s longest tenured mayors.
I hear it was a long, hard campaign.
Baals and Johnson. Anything else?
You and Your Johnson commercial.
Wasn’t this posted earlier today?
Scratch Harry Baals?..............
Nah, can’t hold a candle to:
Jodie Foster’s Beaver Pushed Back
His brother, Claude, declined an opportunity to comment.
I searched the title. It didn’t come up. If it’s a repeat, my apologies, but I didn’t see the original.
This is attention-whore stuff. One wonders, was the man’s legal first name ‘Harry’ or was that a nick for Harold? One figures Harold Baals wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow, but then that would have required a few Fort Wayne folk to have spoken the name out loud once, thought for a moment and then come up with the alternative.
First the Jodie Foster Beaver headline, now this.
Can we make it a three-fer today ?
You are greedy.
Not that that is a bad thing.
Fort Wayne, Ind., officials against putting former mayor's giggle-inducing name on building
The headline might have been different.
In any case, my post to the original thread was:
“Why don’t they compromise and call it the “Harry Baals and Eug. Johnson Memorial Building”.
I had a science teacher in 6th grade whose name was “Harry Bottoms”. I doubt there will ever be a building named after him, either......
Unfortunate name. Junior high must have been a bummer.
bet he drinks Dickens Cider while sitting on his Sofa King.
Who cares if it was posted earlier. Just saw it this time and I’m laughing my **lls off.
The University of Georgia has a building called, and I am not making this up, The Butts-Mehre Center”
I hear that the Mike Hunt OB/GYN Center is on the fast track, though.
Sounds like a mobsters name, like Joey Eyes or Billy Bats. Just think, Harry “Balls” Corleone
Maybe they could name the building with synonyms, like “the hirsute hoedowns building”, or “the furry orbs building”.
*Harry Baals Ping*
Eugene Johnson's nickname is "Yank."
I thought it was “Eug.”
There is a man in Santa FE NM named Peter Handler. He owns a liquor store and has his name in 2 foot high letters. I always thought it was a joke name until I saw his picture in the paper with his name under it.
