Obama Heads to Michigan to Promote Wireless Expansion Plan
Published February 10, 2011
Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- President Obama wants nearly all Americans to have access to speedy wireless services. He's promoting that plan in a small city in Michigan that's becoming a model for how the Internet can bring prosperity to far-flung places.

Obama on Thursday heads to Marquette, Mich., a university and tourism town of 20,000 overlooking Lake Superior that cherishes both its geographical remoteness and technological savvy. He'll see high-tech wireless initiatives in action at Northern Michigan University, where students telecommute, and talk about the plan in his State of the Union address to expand access to high-speed wireless to 98 percent of the population within five years.

It's a lofty goal considering such technology is only now being built in major cities by AT&T, Verizon and others. And it costs billions of dollars that Republicans probably will be unwilling to spend. But it's all part of Obama's new focus on innovation, technology and competitiveness as a pathway to jobs and "winning the future" -- the new White House mantra.

Thursday's visit also takes Obama to a largely conservative area of a state that will be important in the 2012 presidential campaign.

I went down to a store and got mine. I probably did it all wrong.

From the same guy who wants the ability to pull the plug on the net, in an emergency.......

The democrats lost big in Michigan last time and Obama can’t win without Michigan. He desperately needs to pick up some votes from democrats.

Without even reading the article, I thought “Okay. They want to bring High Speed Rail to dead Detroit because it will bring jobs. I will bet, before I read it, that this is somehow hooked in to bringing ‘opportunity’ to dead Detroit...”

And there it was, in the second sentence.

They should have reworded what he really meant...”how government can bring prosperity”

Also of note...he wants “nearly all Americans to have access” Gee. Anyone want to guess which of the electorate will fall into that part not covered by “nearly all” would be?

A president already has the ability to command every communication wire (FCC from the 1930s) in a national emergency.

President Obama wants nearly all Americans to have access to speedy wireless services

Equipped with the WLAN equivalent of the V-chip and under full control of the Fascist Communication Czar, of course.

So, which GE division will this multi-billion dollar boondoggle funnel to? And how long will the unemployment benefits be extended for the capitalist employees who become jobless because of this latest Obama-Picks-The-Winner scam?

Today is a good day to die.
I didn't say for whom.

I’ve been ranting about this for a week.

I’m less than 30 miles west of Ann Arbor and I can’t even get DSL, yet the UP has Wimax. I’ve been pulling the chains of every wireless company to expand, dammit, and let me pay YOU every month. I don’t mind if it’s not screaming fast — I’ll be thrilled with 2-3 Mbps down — but do NOT even suggest caps and throttle/overcharge. Been there, done that, won’t do it again.

Teachers can’t assign homework where internet usage is involved, or they have to carve out class time for it. My daughter had an online Japanese class and had to depend on weird library hours to do her assignments. And this is just the start of the nuisance lack of a decent internet connection causes.

Okay, I’m getting off my soapbox, but it’ll be nearby.

Obama is OFFICIALLY a lame duck President if he is going to go on a National Tour promoting High-Speed Rail and More Wireless Access....

I see this as a full admittance that he is NOT going to move at all in order to get the economy moving. In fact I see this as a full admittance that HE DOES NOT CARE about the American economy.

Millions upon millions of Americans see that Keynesian economics have completely failed and want a full reversal of the first two years of Obama-Reid-Pelosi, but there is NO WAY that this Kenyan will reverse direction. He ran for President for one reason: to bring America down a few notches. Period.

Had the same thought on the huge promotion of plug-in electric cars. Once all of our cars get their "fuel" from the outlet on the wall, Fed Gov could control our "fuel usage" easier by putting limits on house electricity consumption. Already trying to do it with home thermostats.
