What needed to happen was for the military to engineer a “Turkey like” situation where the military supported a secular democracy which lasted until just recently. Mubarak has just engineered a situation that that Islamists could have only dreamed of. Rampant corruption and crony capitalism will not last and Mubarak has made no move to reform it. His supporters are government employees and allied businessmen.

I channel surfed earlier and MSNBC was freaking out to the fact that the muslim brotherhood was BAD with terrorists ties.(Some report came in they COULD NOT spin) So they had some supposed experts on there spinning away trying so hard to say Obama’s muslim brotherhood was good people.

It was comical yet frightening.

There can’t be a military coup in Egypt. In fact, the only ones who deserve credit during the attempted Islamist coup is the Egyptian army. Other reasons besides the fact that the army will not let Egypt fall is the support of the Heshemites, Sauds ....and the enemy of their enemies...Israel, to a point.

Very true. In Arab society, the worst thing that can happen to you is losing face, because then the predators that surround you can decide that it's safe to rip you to pieces.

I would not be surprised that Mubarak is the kind of person who would rather go down in flames than slink away in humiliation. And if HE goes down in flames, he would want to do it in a way that takes Obama down with him.

I have to keep asking myself, why not simply run candidates in the September elections rather than risk Egypt going the way of Russia in 1917 or Iran in 1978? Or is that the aim of those behind the mobocracy.

If elections are held in a few weeks instead of September, the only faction organized enough to field candidates is the Muslim Brotherhood. They won't have as big an advantage in September.
