Obama Wrongfooted by Mubarak as White House Tries to Keep Up

The Obama administration was embarrassingly wrongfooted when the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak confounded expectations by refusing to leave office.

Mubarak's speech came just hours after Barack Obama and the director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, appeared to give credence to the rumours that the Egyptian president was heading for the exit.

Obama has been putting pressure on Mubarak since last week to stand down straight away, but Mubarak, in a televised address tonight, said he would not bow to international pressure, a direct snub to the US president.

Mubarak's response provides a graphic illustration of America's slow decline from its status as the world's sole superpower to a position where it is unable to decisively influence events in Egypt, in spite of that country being one of the biggest recipients of US military aid.

Since the uprising began, the Obama administration has shifted from solidly supporting Mubarak, to suggesting a few days later that he should go now, only to back him at the weekend to remain in office until the autumn – a decision that the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, reversed hours later when she threw US support behind the Egyptian vice-president, Omar Suleiman. But even support for Suleiman may leave US policy trailing behind events in Egypt, with the vice-president seen as too close to Mubarak.

Well said, totally agree with your sentiments.
Yes, indeed he is an abomination, loser but he's our abomination, our loser.

Where is the Obama who said we just needed to “talk” to regimes and they would bow to him?

“For the Guardian to so emphatically admonish someone of O’s
considerable leftist, Anti-American credentials is news.”

It would be a sign of the apocalypse- if it weren’t so extraordinarily well deserved.

All the major communist groups here are in full support of the revolution. No surprise who Obama would side with.

But there is good news.

Obama has stopped smoking and doesn’t color his hair. According to his wife.

Obama is such a wimp, he probably cabled back to Addullah, ‘The next time I see you, I’ll bow even deeper’.

Well loosely, I agree. Beyond that I’m a conscientious objector. ;^)

The only way my ballot would be counted as a vote for him, would be if some of my spit accurately wound up in his square, and it caused a chad to buckle.

Obama would be outmaneuvered by an intoxicated snail.

News Flash: Mubarak’s not resigning and they were all wrong!

“He basically said: I am an Arab warrior, not a community organizer. That speech should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the Middle East.”

I wonder if this is the new spin?

Suleiman Has All Authority, President Mubarak Gave Up All His Power - Egyptian Ambassador to U.S.

“America’s slow decline from its status as the world’s sole super power to a position where it’s unable to decisively influence events in Egypt..”

Thats so sad but it’s true.

Imagine what would be going on with the press right now if GW were sitting where that failed community organizer presently sits and has made the same gaffes.

Good for Mubarak. Why should he bow down to a little pissant leader. Excuse me, but we've not had a slow decline but a rapid tumult under this mickey mouse admin.

WOW!

That puts it into a really harsh white light. 'Arab warrior vs community organizer'.

Seems the man who arrogantly refused to negotiate with his real enemies (the republicans) by cutting them off at a WH round table with the words "I WON" is learning how to eat crow. Hope its served up raw, feathered and rotting.

LOL I knew when I clicked in this article it was not ABC News. ABC reporting a leak from within the WH that this was a sure thing Mubarak was out; sure leaves them with egg on their faces.

They are probably spinning the Obama muslim brotherhood is good propaganda like MSNBC did.

Obama is such a wimp

It's not about him being a 'wimp' (which he is), or 'naive', or 'incompetent'. It's a matter where his loyalties lie. The SOB is as much anti-Israel as he is anti-American.
