2 from Longport face gun charges

LONGPORT NJ – Two residents are facing weapons charges related to the unlawful possession of a military-style Colt AR-15 assault rifle, according to police.

The two were arrested Saturday, Feb. 5 after a month-long investigation.

Walter H. Westcoat, 84, of South 33rd Avenue, was arrested and charged with two counts of unlawful possession of an assault weapon. Westcoat was also charged with unlawful possession of large-capacity magazines.

Arrested at the same time was Mary J. Landry, 54, who resides at the same residence. Landry was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of an unlicensed shotgun. According to Lt. William Hewitt, Landry did have a gun lock on the shotgun.

The arrests culminated an investigation by Ptl. Pierce Shaud and Sgt. Charles Adams and under the direction of Hewitt, who explained Monday that the Colt AR-15 was a legal weapon prior to the ban on assault weapons in New Jersey enacted in 1990.

“Once they were banned, anyone who owned one had one year to make that gun inoperable or it would be considered illegal. It is also illegal to have in your possession large-capacity magazines that hold more than 30 rounds of ammunition,” Hewitt said.

Westcoat and Landry were released on their own recognizance with instructions from Judge John Rosenberger to have no contact with one another.

Hewitt said Westcoat's weapons charges are second-degree offenses and Landry's is a third-degree offense.

This has “Nanny State” written all over it.

Here in Idaho, none of those things are an issue.

Another reason not to move to Jersey... BTW youse people from Jersey.. Stop moving to Florida ... We like it the way it is here, we don’t want it to become another New Jersey, New York, or Massachusetts

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Does everything in NJ have to be licensed or something? Even in the UK, they’re still pretty lax on shotgun ownership.

Isn't it special that the judge can split up a household, that may have more years in it than most people, wanna bet what he would have done if they were homosexuals.

Permit to purchase is required for any firearm.

In NJ, a permit is required to purchase a handgun. The NJ FID card is enough to purchase as many (NJ legal) long guns as you want.

I'm not sure what an "unlicensed shotgun" is.

Oh... the HORROR of it all!!!

This is a TRAVESTY that someone, ANY law-abiding citizen could be charged with a crime in one part of the U.S., that, in MOST other parts of America is PERFECTLY LEGAL.

ESPECIALLY when those laws are UNCONSTITUTIONAL and INFRINGING on citizens God-Given RIGHT to keep and bear arms.

The disgusting, gun-grabbing, freedom-robbing, authoritarian Pieces-of-SH*T (RINOs like Christie and left-wing democRATS like Lautenburg) that put forth these decidedly UN-AMERICAN laws need to be tried for treason and strung up in the town square.

Governor Christie, please pardon this patriot.

Don't count on that anti-gun puke to help, ESPECIALLY when he has campaigned for and supported the so-called "assault" weapons ban.

I wonder how the cops knew he had the AR? Maybe he was trying to sell it or something?

PLEASE put me on that jury.

Do you know what the proper definition of an "assault rifle" is? Then you're off the jury. Only the ignorant will be allowed.
