Rick Santorum discovered this week what nearly all the other GOP presidential candidates already know you dont mess with Sarah Palin.
Santorum touched off a media firestorm Tuesday with remarks that appeared to denigrate Palin, and the response from the former Alaska governor and her supporters was swift and unforgiving. The episode proved instructive: Not only is the Republican outline against Palin taking shape, but so too is the Palin outline for how shell fight back.
With Palin looming as a possible contender for the GOP nomination, the question of how or whether to take her on is a delicate one for her fellow Republicans.
In Santorums case, the former Pennsylvania senator got into trouble in a web-radio interview with conservative commentator S.E. Cupp. While his recent jibes at Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour landed without much notice, Santorums Palin comments blew up in his face.
Asked why he thought Palin wasnt attending the Conservative Political Action Conference, he responded: I have a feeling that she has some demands on her time, and a lot of them have financial benefit attached to them. He added that Palin had other business opportunities as well as all these kids to look after as a mother, both of which caused constraints on her time.
Though Santorum later insisted otherwise, his comments seemed to imply that Palin was more interested in cashing in on her celebrity than running for office, a critique rarely voiced in public by Republican officials. And his mention of her children an especially freighted reference only compounded the situation.

andy barr from politico made up a controversy
If the national GOP wants money from me in the next cycle, they can ask Palin for it.
Don’t step on Superman’s cape, don’t spit into the well and don’t mess around with Sarah.
Palin joked right back about Santorum's comments, which of course were in turn misconstrued by the media.
So you have one non-story being shilled along with another non-story. Par for the course for these pinheads.
Rick, Rick, Rick ... Whatever gave you the idea that you could become President? Sorry, not going to happen.
If he has something against her political philosophy or her stands on issues, why doesn’t he just say so, instead of assailing her personally in such a snide and backhanded way?
Now there's a hilarious phrase.
The guys at Politico don’t seem to care for girls.
Ridiculous non-controversy. I heard Santorum’s remarks, and didn’t think them denigrating, overly frank maybe, but not denigrating. I thought Palin’s non-insult-insult of calling him a “knuckle-dragging Neanderthal” was fairly childish however, and certainly wasn’t presidential.
Actually a fairly astute observation.
Palin was SAVAGELY and UNFAIRLY attacked by the media during the 2008 election. And afterward. No one in the GOP stood up for her.
PALIN STOOD UP FOR HERSELF AND DID NOT BACK DOWN!
That is why she has such a devoted following amongst conservatives. The GOP insiders should have clued in by now. Don’t mess with Palin.
It should also being made clearer to the GOP that their support is a mile wide, but only an inch deep. Show softness and you get abandoned faster than a speeding bullet.
Is SE Cupp really a conservative?
I strongly supported Rick Santorum’s re-election in 2006, but unfortunately he turned of some of the base by giving in to the arm twisting by Bush and Rove and endorsing Arlen Specter in the primary.
That was a mistake. But he was a good, reliable pro-life Senator at a time when others were caving.
But I must say I no longer support him. He hasn’t seemed to be able to get a life after losing that race. If he couldn’t get re-elected Senator, how does he expect to get elected POTUS? This really is a desperation move on his part, and it’s making him act pretty stupid.
I bet none of them have much bad to say about Trump, either. LOL!
Rick did not! I repeat did not say anything about Sarah Palin this is all made up to create chaos in the Republican party!!!!!
How many conservative defended her during the days after the Tucson massacre?
The journOlists trying to make something out of nothing. Palin jokingly responded to Santorum.
NONE, I know it and you know it. I’m all in in for Ms. Palin.
Thank you.
