Malaysian Muslims warned against Valentine's Day (JAKIM: day is "synonymous with vice activities")

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) – As couples around the world ready for Valentine's Day, Islamic officials in Malaysia have warned Muslims against celebrating something "synonymous with vice activities."

The warning follows plans announced last week by several Malaysian states who are planning a crackdown on "immoral acts" during Valentine's Day as part of a campaign to encourage a sin-free lifestyle.

"In reality, as well as historically, the celebration of Valentine's Day is synonymous with vice activities," Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz, head of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM), which oversees the country's Islamic policies, told state media.

"Islam would reject anything, even from the Eastern culture, if it contravenes the Islamic teachings," he added.

Wan Mohamad said a fatwa (ruling) issued by the country's top clerics six years ago noted the day "is associated with elements of Christianity," and "we just cannot get involved with other religion's worshipping rituals."

JAKIM officials will carry out a nationwide 'Mind the Valentine's Day Trap' campaign, he said, aimed at preventing Muslims from celebrating the day.

Nasrudin Hasan Tantawi, head of the Islamic party PAS's youth wing said Wednesday that authorities in the opposition-controlled northern states of Kedah, Penang and Kelantan as well as central Selangor state will also carry out "immorality checks" on February 14.

PAS is part of the opposition alliance that won control of the four states in 2008 elections. Its conservative stance has caused friction with its two partners including the liberal and ethnic Chinese-based Democratic Action Party.

"We have identified spots in these states which are used by lovers and we are deploying local religious department officials as well as party members to stop such sinful acts like casual sex, which violates Islam," he told AFP.

Katie, here’s an idea for one of your Muslim Cosby Family episodes. You have the parents putting the ixnay on a son or daugther’s Valentines

Or you can have local Imam threatening Mom n Mohammed’s Day. Maybe even unilaterally canceling their dinner reservations.

A ratings winner if there ever was one

They’re just mad because Hallmark doesn’t make a card for their goats. But don’t worry, they will, eventually.

Islam is not compatible with Western Civilization.

period, end of story.

Never was. Never will be.

We have allowed them to attack kill and infiltrate for years.

We now support them in taking over nations by not acting or speaking in a straighforward manner about the threats it presents to peace-loving, albeit sinful, folks globally.

BiZarro World Revealed.

Giddyup.

I wonder what he gives his wife on V Day?

a beating, lashing.. or just a stern look.

If he really loves her, he'll behead her.

That prevents all of those sinful acts she might be disposed to do in the future.

I’m not one for Valentines Day. My wife and I have chosen Valentines Day as the only day each year when we do not say that we love each other! As for every other day we we say it at least once if not many more times. We don’t buy into the buying of flowers, presents etc as we don’t think we have to try and make up for anything lacking in our marriage!

I know it’s a bit crazy but we like it :}

So happy non-Valentines day!

Mel

Oh, goody! The Mooslimes have a problem with Valentine’s Day? What are the going to do — blow up a shopping mall, behead a daughter or wife, stone an “adulteress” or “rape” victim, cut a wife’s throat for “honor”? Right, got it. Islam is the Religion of Peace. Nothing to worry about, and nothing to see. Move on, Dhimmis.

I hope that includes the ubiquitous "Barf Alert".

I guess not. I have just been informed by Mod on another thread that it’s okay to post this stuff -— I guess, it’s okay to post it all the time, in every thread, sometimes longer than the title itself, and with it being unclear whether the paren is the brainchild of the poster or the actual addition by the author of the article.

I have been okay with the “barf alert” over the years and with the occasional comment. (Posters used to police themselves on the “barf alert” because if it was used injudiciously — i.e. NOT rarely -— the poster got their lunch jumped in by other freepers.)

But, IMHO, the trend toward adding comments in the title box has gotten out of control lately. I scroll through the forum and see nothing but thread after thread that has a lengthy “explanation” or snark — or, worst of all, a restatement of the title in the poster’s own words, as if we wouldn’t get it otherwise — added to the title box. Which makes me, the reader, have to wade through someone else’s stuff before I can even figure out what the article’s title is.

I don’t see how that follows either the letter or the spirit of the rule that the title of the post is to be the exact title of the article. I don’t read that to mean “the exact title of the article + the poster’s editorial comment, snark, or restatement of the title in their own words.”

That said, maybe the mods will take another look at what this trend is really doing to the format of the forum. That’s the only reason I care. I get sick of trying to scan titles and having to wade through someone’s comment that should, at least as long as I’ve been around here, be in the comment box.

And I don’t know why a poster would think their comments need to be “in lights” in the title box. I don’t get that. I’m sure the posters don’t mean it this way, but it ends up being rather rude. The only exceptions might be the OCCASIONAL “barf alert” and a paren to make the title clear IF the first part of the posted excerpt doesn’t make the title clear.

.

Makes the forum sound like a bunch of 3rd grader who must be warned in advance of what they read.

There's some truth to what you said. However, the "barf alert" has a very long history on FR and it probably got started at a time where it was more of an inside joke than it is today. I can remember posts where people would say "hey, you forgot the 'barf alert'."

So, in a bow to tradition, I'm okay with that. That said, though, people really did police themselves better on such things in the past.

Tonight I see the forum is much cleaner for the most part, so maybe finally speaking up a little here and there brought back some of that civic-mindedness! OTOH, the posters who add the (what the title really means and really means to me and you should know it now before even clicking on the thread because otherwise you might not get it) paretheticals maybe aren't out and about so much tonight. :)

Probably should have pinged you to this underlying post as we were still discussing mod response. Sorry.

Also wanted to add that what really made me decide to say something was one day I saw a thread on a Dick Morris article. I thought he had added the parenthetical to the title, but when I clicked on the article, not only did I realize it was the poster’s comment (not the author’s idea to convey in the title), but the parenthetical made the article seem like the exact opposite of what the author was conveying in the title.

That’s not right.

There’s a place for that and it seems to me it’s in the comment box, not in hijacking the title box.

Sure, some comments in the title box don’t create a mess. But a line must be drawn and it seems to me the only way to do that is to say comments need to be in the comment box. IMHO.

There are posters who tend to do this on every thread they post. To the point now that they simply restate the title in their own words, as if we won’t get it and the excerpt won’t explain it adequately.

Thanks.
