Today was the roll-out of the new 747-8i. The i stands for Intercontinental. It was a great event and a beautiful airplane. We do still build some things here in the U.S. and we build them big.

Okay. I love the 747, and it could just be the sound, but...that sounded a lot like arabic music.

Probably just me...sheesh.

Cool. What’s the difference from just a 747-500?

They never made the -500.

The previous model was the -400. The -8i is 19 feet longer than the -400. The first actual stretch of the 747. So it will carry about 60 more passengers. Fly further. it uses the 787 engines so it is more fuel efficient and quieter too.

And to the other poster the music was really great. Two guys on violins and a woman on big kettle drums.

Is that the new Air China paint scheme?

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to ride upstairs on one of those badboys from South Africa to London.

Very cozy and quite.

This is a flight test airplane. So this is a Boeing paint scheme and it will be repainted before it delivers. Lufthansa and Korean air are the two main customers.

(and a few VIP orders)

Probably the fact that Boeing has never manufactured a 747-500.

If it’s a turbulent flight it can be a little roly-poly up there, a lot of side to side motion. More stable in the main cabiin.

747-500

Actually, there were 4 of them built. All assigned as backup Air Force One aircraft in case of war.

They combine Boeing’s airliner building skills with Lockheed’s stealth technology.

The 500 exists.... just no one can see them....

:)

Thanks for posting. She's a big ol’ girl. I have flown on the -400 (Cathay Pacific) and enjoyed the ride. I'd love to plant my backside in one of the -800’s seats.

Didn’t notice.

I was a late night flight I was too busy enjoying the lay flat seats. (sleeping)

I was the lucky victim of an unexpected upgrade. British Airways Business Class is very nice.

I saw one over at Moses Lake, where Boeing does its post manufacture test flights. It and the 787 are really awesome looking airplanes.

Isn’t this one made out of metal rather than the plastic of the ill-fated 787?

“They never made the -500”

There was never a model designated the -500 offered?

or there was and they just never sold any?
