What will travelling salesmen read over their “Deluxe” continental breakfast of generic fruit-loops, a spotted banana and week-old bagel at Holiday Inn Express?

1. USAToday is preparing a plan to for spinning out of Gannett or to be sold. Conversations are ongoing. In the meantime, Hunke has been asked to clean up the balance sheet and “pretty up” USAT.

LOL! I was on a plane and Obama voters were in front of me “reading” the sports section. They loaded it up with pictures because these people cannot read. Holiday Inn Express is not that bad. Hilton Garden Inn’s are better.

I stayed in one of the cheaper suites in Denver and they had free beer and food at happy hour. Staybridge? Or maybe another one. Residence Inn is pretty good too. There are so many.

“Murdoch should buy it.”

An unapologetically conservative newspaper, with real news in it, would be a relief to find in front of my hotelroom door.

I wouldn’t just step over it.

Last business trip I was on, I got to the hotel about 11:30PM at night. There was a giant stack of USA Today papers sitting at the desk (for that day). There was also 1 Wall St. Journal paper available. The newspaper business has about 3 to 5 years left before they go extinct.

Ran into a guy at my local Starbucks.

He sat next to me for a while and then before leaving he offered me a copy of that day’s USA Today.

He made some comment about the paper that (in my memory) did not sound like a sales comment.

We talked a bit about how many newspapers are likely to go “all electronic”.

He said I could give the paper to someone else if I didn’t want it and offered that he was “working for them”, meaning working for USA Today.

I declined but asked him not to take it personally.

He said he didn’t.

I told him to just leave the paper at his table, some other customer or customers will likely read it.

Maybe he was there to try to get a place for USA Today on what is offered “in store”, in print, at Starbucks; which at this time is the NYSlimes and the Wall Street Journal. WSJ was added not so long ago (maybe after being acquired by Newscorp??).

Everyone, don’t forget that you can get $0.75 back for each day’s USA Today when at a Hilton branded hotel. The room invoice shows how to do so at the bottom.
