BELGRADE -- A Belgrade resident fatally shot a Minnesota man in self-defense early Monday morning, Nance County authorities believe.

Robert Dodds, 30, of rural Belgrade shot Joseph William Cameron, 30, of Stacy, Minn., after the Minnesota man reportedly came after him with a knife.

At 1:08 a.m. Monday, Nance County authorities received a 911 emergency call from Dodds regarding a shooting at his residence west of Belgrade.

Nance County sheriff's deputies, the Nebraska State Patrol investigation team and Fullerton and Belgrade rescue squads responded to 17802 N. 185th St.

Nance County Attorney Rodney Wetovick said he was contacted and pronounced Cameron dead about 2:15 a.m. Monday.

According to a press release from Nance County authorities:

Cameron was seen leaving the New Frontier bar in Belgrade with Beth Metz, 29, of Belgrade and Dodds. The three were going to check cattle at a nearby farm and then went to Dodds' residence.

An altercation took place between Dodds and Cameron, and Dodds locked Metz and Cameron out of his home.

Cameron gained entry into Dodds' home by kicking in the door.

Authorities found Cameron's body inside the residence with a knife. The sheath for the knife was on Cameron's belt.

Dodds apparently shot Cameron once with a 7 mm rifle in the mid-left torso area beneath the ribs. An autopsy is scheduled in Omaha at 8 a.m. today.

Wetovick said that, although the matter remains under investigation by the State Patrol and Nance County Sheriff's Department, the incident initially appears to be self-defense, and therefore, no arrests have been made.

"There is no way to collaborate it, but Dodds said he warned him off twice as (Cameron) waved the knife at him," Wetovick said

Nance County Sheriff said Cameron had a "fairly extensive criminal history" but didn't know any details.

Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight.

A Belgrade man named Dodds? Doesn’t sound very Serbian. Maybe it was originally Dodic.

Me too. My first thought was, "But why would I care about a shooting in Yugoslavia?"

Then I saw the (NE).

And never think a knife will intimidate someone with a gun.
It reads that way to me.

“well actually belgrade ne is only 10 min from my house nothing ever happens there ever it only has about 150 ppl living in it. “

I’m catching on now. I was wondering because Clinton was bombing the crap out of Belgrade to help the Muslims take over Kosovo, yet people 10 minutes away didn’t know it was going on? It’s too bad that the people in the big Belgrade weren’t able to defend themselves the way Dodds did...but they have gun control over there...
