The World Bank projects that the number of chronically hungry people around the world will reach 1 billion by the end of this year, due to a relentless rise in food prices. The trends towards the 1bn are worrisome, World Bank President Robert Zoellick said. Global food prices are rising to dangerous levels. The price hike is already pushing millions of people into poverty and putting stress on the most vulnerable, who spend more than half of their income on food.
The Financial Times reports:
The number of chronically hungry people surpassed 1bn about one in six people on the planet for the first time two years ago. Before that crisis, there were some 850m chronically hungry people in the world, a level that has been about constant since the early 1980s. Mr Zoellick said the current rise in food prices, coming so soon after the 2007-08 crisis, suggested the world was not dealing with a one-time event. Rather, long-term demand was likely to keep upward pressures on prices for years to come, he said.

Feeding the Third World over teh last 60 years has been a terrible mistake. All it has accomplished is to double the population which is incapable of feeding itself.
Funny food prices are rising everywhere in the world except here. Social security says we have had no inflation for two years.

What’s the number of chronically obese people, worldwide?
Is it increasing, or decreasing?
Just curious.
I'm only asking because my BS detector is going off.
I get hungry every day, especially when I don't eat for a while. Does that mean I'm "chronically hungry"?
I look for S.S. to say the same thing for next year too. Remember the last raise? I believe it was about 5.4%, which was quite nice but no raise at all in the 2 years following and possibly 3 years. I hope all the old folks remember this in the next election.
Medicare slashes are coming too. 'course there are members here who think that's just fine, never mind we've paid for it all our working lives.
Now, I'll sit back and wait for the inevitable flames.
If ever there was a year to plan and plant a vegetable garden, this is it. Anything you can do to provide you and yours with at least a portion of your food is a help and a good vegetable garden will augment your emergency pantry nicely.
And our 6 laying hens are averaging 5.3 eggs a day now that the coldest weather is past. Look into an urban chicken coop...eggs are the best source of protein we know of and chickens are easy to keep.
Your biggest problem is still water, and if you are interested, I have been photo-documenting the installation of a 300 gallon above ground water tank that collects rainwater out of one downspout. We’ll use it to water 100 square feet of new raised beds, and 300 gallons of fresh water, ready for filtering an boiling is not a bad thing to have around either.
Time to get busy, if you have not already been....
Maybe it is a bad time for moochelle obama to choose “obesity” as her cause celebre - ya think?
You been to the supermarket lately?
Last week a head of lettuce was $5 here.
RE: Social security says we have had no inflation for two years.
The government is just doing that to AVOID having to pay Seniors more. In other words, “no inflation” ( note the quotes ), means NO COLA’s.
Why are is SS doing that ? Well, if you have to ask then you have not been paying attention -— THE DAY OF RECKONING FOR THE PONZI SCHEME HAS ARRIVED. SOCIAL SECURITY IS ABOUT TO RUN OUT OF MONEY !
It happened to Bernard Madoff after 25 years. It is beginning to happen to Social Security today.
It might help if we stopped burning our food (corn)...Stevie666
“Social security says we have had no inflation for two years.”
Odd, I thought I had just read that it had increased by 2% since December.(but I can’t remember where I saw it)
Blah, blah, blah.
Everyone knows this is Bush's fault, it's the Republican's fault, it's the fault of conservative Christian's, it's white people's fault, it's Europe and America's fault, it's capitalism's fault ------ right?
Wrong! It's Sarah Palin's fault. Yeah, she's the one to blame.
