Thawing permafrost likely will accelerate global warming, study finds

ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2011) — Up to two-thirds of Earth's permafrost likely will disappear by 2200 as a result of warming temperatures, unleashing vast quantities of carbon into the atmosphere, says a new study by the University of Colorado Boulder's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences.

The carbon resides in permanently frozen ground that is beginning to thaw in high latitudes from warming temperatures, which will impact not only the climate but also international strategies to reduce fossil fuel emissions, said CU-Boulder's Kevin Schaefer, lead study author. "If we want to hit a target carbon dioxide concentration, then we have to reduce fossil fuel emissions that much lower than previously thought to account for this additional carbon from the permafrost," he said. "Otherwise we will end up with a warmer Earth than we want." posted using frpa

CO2 is yummies for plants. If the organic material in the permafrost should begin to oxidize and add CO2 to the atmosphere, forests (rain and otherwise) around the world will say mmm, mmm, thank you.

For what it’s worth, this jerk will probably win a Nobel Prize - for no good reason.

This is nothing new. The Permian Extinction is thought to have been caused by the massive release of methane into the atmosphere. It happened long before people were around. I noticed they completely avoided mentioning it.

OK, where did you find the second study? Sounds like something from the Carter years.

There was a thread not long ago in which some scientist declared that the worldwide food shortages were the fault of global warming. Of course, he didn't spell it out, but his basic thesis seemed to be that the over-abundance of plant food (CO2) was leading to crop failures.

These people are just idiots.

I should hope so. I would be 240 years old when this report would be applicable. I don’t think anyone alive will be around.

The Permian was the worst extinction the earth is known to have had. You’d think they’d be screaming like blue-reared monkeys about it, if they think it’s going to happen a second time. Never mind the supposed warming or the ocean rising, we’re gonna suffocate!!!

Was he asserting that surplus CO2 was helping weeds more than it was helping food crops?

I think he was asserting that it was so gosh darn hot that nothing would grow.

But of course, it’s like all that CO2 sneaked up and managed to turn the atmosphere into a hot house before green plants could notice that it was there and begin to snarf it up. There has to be some kind of equilibrium equation — even the warmists should be acknowledging the damper that green vegetation would put on the effect, if they’re trying to be honest scientists.

I don’t have a second study done yet, but I know what my model will show so I just need $20 million in grant money to conduct my study to fit my model.
