Chicago Population Sinks to 1920 Level to 2,695,598 a 6.9% decline from 2000 to 2010

CHICAGO—A larger-than-expected exodus over the past 10 years reduced the population of Chicago to a level not seen in nearly a century.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday that during the decade ended in 2010, Chicago's population fell 6.9% to 2,695,598 people, fewer than the 2.7 million reported back in 1920.

Chicago's Exodus View Interactive ..After peaking at 3.62 million people in 1950, Chicago underwent a half century of decline that ended only when the 1990s boom years produced a small gain in the 2000 count. At that time, the city loudly celebrated its comeback.

But the recent recession accelerated a migration both to the metropolitan area's farthest suburbs and to the Southern U.S. Chicago nonetheless is expected to remain the nation's third-largest city, behind New York and Los Angeles and just ahead of Houston, for which final census numbers aren't in yet.

The exodus took a big chunk out of the city's black population in particular, shrinking it to 887,608 from 1,065,009, according to William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution think tank in Washington.

I think it is a combination of:

1. The loss of public housing bastions like Cabrini Green
2. Gang warfare and crack coccaine are devasting black neighborhoods
3. Some blacks are getting sick and tired of being crapped on by those who claim to be looking out for them.

It is an interesting trend.

You wouldn’t need to do much.

1. Sample the worst precincts.

2. Generate the story in drip fashion. i.e. one story in the reader or on Don Wade & Roma. Let Orr et al respond with the usual denials and then just keep “finding” more problems.

3. Have a ready solution. The vote is so important that we don’t want it stolen. Make everyone re-register between now and the next election. Demand they use state ids and demand independent oversight of the process.

Embarrassment works, especially with “Mr. Clean” David Orr.

I was born and raised in Chicago. I entered the Army in 1964 and returned in 1967. In 1974, I moved to Bolingbrook IL about 30 miles sw of Chicago where I remained until 1992 when I moved to Florida.

I was a highly skilled computer programmer in Chicago but couldn't find much work here in the Orlando area. I wound up commuting to Tampa 97.9 miles each way and even had to work in Jersey City NJ for three months just to pay my bills and put food on the table for my family.

The ONLY advantage Chicago has over Florida is employment and the fine arts as in Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the great Joliet American Legion Band. In fact, the ONLY thing I miss from Chicago is the Joliet band which I was a member of for 8 great years. I still follow the Cubs, Blackhawks and Bears down here whenever I can.

I retired back in 2000 after a car accident and haven't worked since. I can't say things are easy here but the weather helps a lot despite the hot summers.

In Chicago, it cost a lot to heat our house. Down here, it costs a lot to cool it. But at least the I don't expect to freeze to death. No more 25 below zero days for me. We only see a few days in the upper 30’s each year and I spend most of the year in t-shirts. That includes most of the winter.

Much of what I knew of in Chicago has ceased to exist with at least three of my former residences being demolished and replaced. My high school, Harrison Tech, which was a great school has been shut down and converted to a middle school.

The neighborhood I grew up in has changed to latin/Mexican and my old neighborhood of South lawndale is now known as ‘little village’. At least it was when I lived there.

I remember the race riots back in the early 60’s as well which revolved around the high school.

The whites have alrerady left with the blacks taking over many areas. The latinos are whats moving into the void and inbetween the black and white areas.

I sued to live in the South lawndale neighborhood which was ethnic european such as Czech, Polish, Lithuanian, etc. The blacks started moving into that area but were stopped by the latinos moving in before them. My old neighborhood is now mostly latino while the whites who used to live there long gone to the suburbs.

Typo correction, ‘used’ not ‘sued’.

How do you access the voter rolls?

I’ve never ordered them myself, but I’ve seen them, held them and used them, so it can be done. I’d speak to a friendly GOPer and see or just call Orr’s office and tell them you want to order the voter rolls for several precincts.

They should walk you through the process.

I’m running for the Glenview Park District Board, and I paid $5 (to the county clerk) for a list of all precincts, in my district. It includes the name, address, whether they voted, in 2006, ‘07, ‘08, ‘09, and ‘10, and, if they voted in primaries, it tells whether they got a republican or democrat ballot. If you know anyone, who lives in that area, please ask them to vote for me. I’ll start walking precincts, tomorrow.

Will do, PhilC.

Thebaddog, I’ve thought about this situation in Chicago. You’d need to take a look at precincts that had more votes cast than registered voters. Focusing on those will pay off the most.

I looked over the web page. It’s pretty dense. I might have to reach out o the Texas tea party groups for some insight. They had groups doing searches comparing addresses and voters.
