AN UPPER LOW APPROACHING FROM THE NORTHWEST WILL BRING RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FRIDAY EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY. PRECIPITATION COULD BE HEAVY AT TIMES. SHOWERS WILL TAPER OFF SATURDAY AFTERNOON INTO SUNDAY. LOCAL STRONG GUSTY WINDS WILL ACCOMPANY THIS SYSTEM...ESPECIALLY IN THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS.
ESTIMATED RAINFALL AMOUNTS ARE 1 TO 1.50 INCHES COASTS AND VALLEYS WITH 1.50 TO 3.50 INCHES IN THE MOUNTAINS. THERE SHOULD BE ABOUT 0.40 TO 0.85 INCH IN THE HIGH DESERTS AND 0.25 TO 0.50 INCH IN THE LOW DESERTS. THERE COULD BE ISOLATED LARGER AMOUNTS...ESPECIALLY ON THE SOUTHWEST FACING SLOPES OF THE SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY MOUNTAINS.
THE SNOW LEVEL WILL LOWER TO ABOUT 4500 FEET NORTH TO 5000 FEET SOUTH. THERE SHOULD BE AREAS OF SNOW ACCUMULATION OF A FOOT OR TWO AT THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS.

Just curious...
Are the projected rainfall amounts for this storm actually less than the previous storms that have hit California this year?
And also, isn’t this the time of year when California wants rain in order to replenish the aquifier and the reservoirs? Or are they still full from the previous storms?
Hopefully, some of this will make it as far as the Upper Colorado watershed.
CA reservoirs = mostly full!
We are weather wimps out here. The numbers do not sound all that dramatic, but lots of places in CA can flood if those small numbers of inches of rain fall within a narrow-enough time period.
And having lived through a flood and knowing how completely it will ruin your life, I’m not making light of it.
Water runs downhill out here and there is a lot of downhill....
The road crews are out in force in our neck of the woods (mountains north of Santa Clarita), shoring up the canyon bridges and road shoulders. They seem to be expecting major water flows.
In the Bay Area, we get 100% of our rain in 6 months, Nov to May, give or take. San Jose was off to a great start through December, but it’s been dry since then. SJ was at 60% of normal at the beginning of the week, so this storm is helping. It was originally going to end on Weds, but another one is stacked up, so that is good news.

Yes, the “First Law of Civil Engineering.” Except it isn’t “water” that flows downhill.
There is a misconception that California receives water supplies from rain. Most rainfall runs off into rivers or soaks into the ground. The majority of California's water needs comes from snowfall in the Sierra Nevada Range and right now it is at over 200% of normal snowpack. Another two feet fell yesterday and more is on the way.

True! We have a whopping snow-pack this year, one of the best in years - however, we have a stupid bunch of whack-jobs that declared a wee minnow ‘endangered’ - so, forget any more water for the San Joaquin Valley, south-coastal farms and Los Angeles any time in the near future.

Oh Los Angeles will get their water. They have their very own, personal, 200+ mile long pipeline running directly from the Sierra to the city.

We were colder than Philly this morning.
This could be an awesome 3 day ski weekend in the Sierras.
Got a traffic report from a gal we know, who commutes from here to Vacaville on 12/I80 east. Last night, she said it looked like everyone who skied was on the road with skies/snow boards mounted on top of SUVs and other vehicles.
