Intel said in October it plans to spend $6 billion to $8 billion on high-tech manufacturing facilities in Arizona and Oregon, creating as many as 8,000 construction jobs."

Yeah, you want to double the price of oil and every other manufacturing input that is imported into America. That'll really cause a manufacturing and export boom, won't it. LOL!

Intel had plans for this expansion way before Obummer got involved. He’s just trying to take credit for it.
This is right out of the Clinton playbook. Get in with companies who have $$$.
GWB could have done the same thing however few of his advisors had an understanding of Silicon Valley and how it works. Andy Grove, Craig Barrett and Paul Ortellni are all Republicans (Andy switched in ‘04 due to GWB refusing to talk to Intel)
The fab’s in Oregon are mostly development fabs (ie small scale). Intel debugs a process on a small fab and then moves it to the full production fabs. This costs less $$$ if a problem shows up or a vendor can’t deliver.
In spite of anything you may have heard, Intel has developed the highest technology process on the planet. They are not going to hand it China or Mexico for security reasons.

Actually, that's not entirely the reason for this decision (although it could be a part of it). I lived in Oregon a while back and about 12 years ago (IIRC) Intel wanted to expand their plants there - but the government said they would rather not expand the manufacturing plants. They wanted to attract more white collar type employers. And Oregon has been in a recession ever since.

Yeah. They're at 32nm and the next step should be 22nm. 14nm is big. In a small way, that is.
Wonder if Intel is souring (scared crapless) on their overseas plants. Even Ireland is likely looking less good than before.
Ten years of outsourcing (generally in the electronics area) makes the lower wages they’ll offer look quite attractive to the unemployed with expertise or experience.
Not only do semiconductor manufacturing plants require no employees, but the actually increase the number of unemployed in any are where they are built. They are often referred to as employment sinks.
A 100% import tariff? 100% of what? Oil is at about $85 per barrel. So let's tax the imported oil at 100% making it $170 per barrel.
Now suppose that you are very fortunate and hold American oil in the amount of 10% of present day consumption. And suppose that we presently are importing half of our oil.
What price will the people who own the other American oil amounting to 40% of our present usage charge for their oil? Why would they charge even a penny less than $185? Is there any reason that they wouldn't get that price?
What price would you then charge for the oil YOU have? Would you give it away at $85 per barrel to people who are just going to turn around and immediately sell it for $185?
Taxing imported oil would do nothing to increase production here because our socialist government doesn't want the production increased.
