Poll: Majority don't side with Walker; senators should come home
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ^ | 02/19/11 | Lee Berquist

A new poll shows that a small majority of Wisconsin residents disagree with Gov. Scott Walker’s plans to increase public employees’ share of their benefits and to strip the unions of much of their power.

But the poll also says that a stronger majority of respondents think that Democratic state senators, who fled the Capitol on Thursday to avoid taking a vote on the Walker’s legislation, should return to Madison.

The poll was conducted and paid for We Ask America of Springfield, Ill. Gregg Durham, chief operating officer of the polling group, said that his organization is largely owned by the Illinois Manufacturers' Association, but the polling work of We Ask America is done separately from the association.

The poll was conducted on Thursday by sampling 2,397 Wisconsin residents. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points....

The poll asked respondents if they approve or disapprove of Walker’s plans. According to the poll, 43.05% approved and 51.9% disapproved. 5.05% were uncertain. Females and union households registered higher disapproval.

On whether the Democratic senators should return to Madison, 55.99% said yes, 36.38% said no and 7.63% were not sure. There was virtually no difference of opinion based on gender...

“Clearly, they may be against part of Walker’s plans, but they felt that senators should come back too,” Durham said. “I think that’s the sign of a pretty mature electorate, that they can separate those two issues.”

“It’s pretty clear that people view Wisconsin as a burgeoning swing state,” Durham said. “But clearly, too, there is a history of the state of rewarding people who take stances that aren’t safe, so it makes it an intersting place for people to investigate.”

“Read the article some more and looked who conducted the poll. I would take a look at the sampling.”

Last November was the only poll that counted. Elections matter. The legislature needs to pass new legislation fining public employees who engage in illegal work actions. I would also like to see taxpayers given the ability to sue individual teachers and labor cartels over illegal work actions.

lets see...a SMALL majority doesn't agree with Walker...a LARGER majority doesn't agree with the law breaking unions...got it...it's perfectly clear...NOT! what the hell is a SMALL majority?...seems to me that in most languages a SMALL majority is really just a minority!

It was a poll of residents. The political polls should always be a poll of some kind of voters. Registered is okay, likely is better.

It is skewed to liberals, by the nature of the poll. If this were a national poll it would be skewed about 10% from likely voters poll results. In national polls this is usually called an Adult Poll because the poll is only polling based on someone, somewhere in Wisconsin, answering their phone.

You can check the truth by applying the rough difference in a voter poll with the adult/resident poll and just apply the roughly 10% difference. No one would be surprised that just 35% of the likely voters would support the obstruction of the legislature. 40% of the registered voters may even support that action. Texas legislators did the same action and the result was a veto proof republican Texas legislature.

Nice theater, but when you debate an opponent for reelection, not exactly a defensible position. It will bite them in the behind. The magic sauce applied in this kind poll, will not show up in their reelection bids and they know this.

I venture to say that 80-90% of the public doesn’t have a clue what Walker’s proposal actually is. They’ve been misinformed by the left-wing media and are falling for the big lie. Just like in 2008 when they voted for that worthless dirtbag communist for president.

AP AM drive time news on Friday, the headlines that are the primary news source for a majority of busy people, billed it as an “anti-union” measure, postured the teachers as martyrs and never once mentioned balancing the budget. The news is a snow job.

A majority disapproves of Walker's generous proposal? WTH is wrong with people?

For a long time Wisconsin had liberal government, there's a reason for that. That government there is more conservative now, may be a fluke.

O’Reilly said the real polls will come out next week. These done by newspapers really mean zip. If the people of WI want the unions to get raises and run their economy totally in the ground, let the dummies do it. But, I have a feeling that is not the case. I have a feeling that the average Wisconsinite has just about had enough of this cr*p.

Public opinion will likely be volatile on this issue.

People often say they want cuts and something done about public sector unions, but as soon as the teachers come out whining and crying the public, at least in the past, tends to break down and support the educators.

My guess is by next week we will see most polls will oppose Walker’s plan. As time goes by though, it may swing again in the Governors favor as people get sick of teachers skipping out on work.

This is a pretty big deal and Wisconsin is a union friendly state. If Walker and the Republicans stick to the their guns and effectively break the Wisconsin public employee’s unions it will be an amazing victory and perhaps a PATCO moment.

The Governor and Assembly and Senate Republicans MUST hold strong here. The runaway Senate Democrats will have to come back eventually, and we will simply pass the bill when they do.

I’d like to see the questions; how they were asked, wording, etc.

You can get someone to say “yes” or “no” to damned near any question if you word “just so...”

As an Illinois resident I can say with confidence we should pay zero attention to any poll done by any outfit from Springfield IL.
