Poll: Majority don't side with Walker; senators should come home
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ^ | 02/19/11 | Lee Berquist

A new poll shows that a small majority of Wisconsin residents disagree with Gov. Scott Walker’s plans to increase public employees’ share of their benefits and to strip the unions of much of their power.

But the poll also says that a stronger majority of respondents think that Democratic state senators, who fled the Capitol on Thursday to avoid taking a vote on the Walker’s legislation, should return to Madison.

The poll was conducted and paid for We Ask America of Springfield, Ill. Gregg Durham, chief operating officer of the polling group, said that his organization is largely owned by the Illinois Manufacturers' Association, but the polling work of We Ask America is done separately from the association.

The poll was conducted on Thursday by sampling 2,397 Wisconsin residents. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points....

The poll asked respondents if they approve or disapprove of Walker’s plans. According to the poll, 43.05% approved and 51.9% disapproved. 5.05% were uncertain. Females and union households registered higher disapproval.

On whether the Democratic senators should return to Madison, 55.99% said yes, 36.38% said no and 7.63% were not sure. There was virtually no difference of opinion based on gender...

“Clearly, they may be against part of Walker’s plans, but they felt that senators should come back too,” Durham said. “I think that’s the sign of a pretty mature electorate, that they can separate those two issues.”

“It’s pretty clear that people view Wisconsin as a burgeoning swing state,” Durham said. “But clearly, too, there is a history of the state of rewarding people who take stances that aren’t safe, so it makes it an intersting place for people to investigate.”

It’s a fake poll intended to make Walker give in.

Why do you thing the RAT democrats who fled said they may not come back for weeks.

What they are saying is they won’t come back until the fake polls make Walker or some of the other GOP senators blink.

I am betting that the sample was a bit weighted towards those who could answer the phone, since they were not working.

Did the pollster ask if they supported a massive tax increase to pay for public sector unions bloated salary and benefits?

Who trusts the polls. The real poll was in November.

This strike is not about worker benefits, it’s about unionization of the state workers under a federal union, Obama’s SEIU.

That’s what Obamacare is about, as well, unionization of 1/5 of the economy under the SEIU. The health care workers on the West Coast are already part of the SEIU. Obama wants the insurance workes as well. He wants to control the whole country through the SEIU and he’s using the internet to do it, just like they did in Egypt.

Did you hear about that? Glenn Beck was on O’Reilly saying that he has seen proof that the US State department worked with Google to agitate the over throw of Mubarak. Now, Obama is working to over throw the state governments in the US.

A liberal rag and a liberal poll, thru their best contortions can only get a tad over 50% to disapprove?

Hold fast governor Walker and GOP!

I’m under the impression that We Ask America is a GOP polling firm. But I agree thst the sampling influenced the outcome: this is a poll of “residents” not likely voters. I figure this shifted the results to the left by five points or so, which still gives pretty amazing results regarding public opinion of the proposal.

Fine, let him raise property taxes, sales taxes, gasoline tax, sugar and fat tax, employment taxes... every damn tax on the books, then he should give himself a raise with increased benefits then leave for a long vacation... oh, and screw WI cheese...

It has to be a push poll.

I don’t buy the results of this poll. There was a thread up yesterday of a nationwide poll which showed that a strong majority of Americans side with Gov Walker’s position on the public unions.

Responsible Americans with jobs, families, and mortgages have polled strongly in favor of scaling back the wages and benefits of public employee union members.

Sounds like another poll of left-liberal slackers and parasites to me.

“On whether the Democratic senators should return to Madison, 55.99% said yes, 36.38% said no . . .”

That’s the real poll. A return by the senators means the legislation will be passed.

It has to be a push poll. The people elected Walker AND the Republicans when the Republicans openly said that they would rein in the power of the public unions.

Really? Wasn't this part of Walker's election campaign platform?

Maybe they polled the demonstrators to get the ‘slight’ majority.

I never trust what I read in a left-wing rag. Especially not the headline.
