After Long Exile, Sunni Cleric Takes Role in Egypt (Remember this name: Yusuf al-Qaradawi)
NYT ^ | 2/18/2011 | David Kirkpatrick

Sheik Yusuf al-Qaradawi, an influential Sunni cleric who is banned from the United States and Britain for supporting violence against Israel and American forces in Iraq, delivered his first public sermon here in 50 years on Friday, emerging as a powerful voice in the struggle to shape what kind of Egyptian state emerges from the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

[....]

Sheik Qaradawi, a popular television cleric whose program reaches an audience of tens of millions worldwide, addressed a rapt audience of more than a million Egyptians gathered in Tahrir Square to celebrate the uprising and honor those who died.

....The sermon was the first public address here by Sheik Qaradawi, 84, since he fled Egypt for Qatar in 1961. An intellectual inspiration to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, Sheik Qaradawi was jailed in Egypt three times for his ties to the group and spent most of his life abroad.

Deja vu all over again.

He's just the sort of cleric that Obama and the State Department will work to boost, as a "good" Islamist.

But don’t forget, Islam is the religion of peace. Ignore the suppressive regimes, rape rooms, murder, and constant hate speech that comes out of the ME. They are for peace. Well, when they aren’t trying to kill anybody or promoting death to the infidel. Peace I tell you.

He has an “ask the mullah” Dear Abby-type column and show.

So did Khomenei, whose first published work was a column telling Muslim men it was okay to use chickens for sex as long as they didn’t eat the chicken afterwards. It was unclear whether they could sell it in the market to other Muslims or if they could only sell it to kaffirs...

There is nothing to worry about. We have it on no greate authority than Jimmy Carter, “I’ve known members of the Muslim Brotherhood. They’re not anything to be afraid of.” However, just as a precaution, I will no longer be dining at that Muhammed’s Fried Chicken place.

Yes, that’s the same leader Jimmy Carter spoke so highly of too.
