TX gun buybacks to have a second shot
KXAN ^ | 21 Feb 2011 | Jackie Vega

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Police in the state capital will bring back its very popular Guns4Groceries, a "no questions asked" gun buyback program that drew an overwhelming response last summer during its inaugural run.

The second run for the program doesn't come as much of a surprise for many after Austin police said the massive turnout last year was a good sign that it would return.

"It is not about infringing on rights to bear arms, it is about collecting unwanted firearms off thre streets," said Lt. Ely Reyes with Austin Police Department.

February 26th from 9 AM to 1 PM, APD and the Greater Austin Crime Commission will be buying back guns, no questions asked, at the Oak Meadow Baptist Church.

$200 in cash gift cards will be given for assault rifles, $100 for handguns, pistols and rifles, and $10 for replica guns, BB guns, and air guns.

There is a two-gun limit per person.

Reyes says unwanted guns often end up in the wrong hands and they hope to give families a safe avenue to dispose of the guns, especially after a violent year.

Reyes, you lie!!! You should be made to pay fair market value with your own money, instead of screwing little old people out of their property with your feel good crap.

Uhh.. They need to re-think that reward. I think a beat up SKS might bring more in private sale than that. Am I wrong?

..it is about collecting unwanted firearms off the streets

So these guns are on the streets?? I don't think so. Most peoples guns are in closets, drawers and safes. They are not "on the streets." This isn't going to make anyone any safer. But it might jeopardize grandma' who no longer will have a gun to protect herself.

There was a similar buy back in Washington, DC or nearby a few years ago. It too ran out of cash. A lot of the guns were old and in poor condition. A lot were gotten rid of by people who didn’t want them in their homes. Young gang bangers grow up, leave home to live more sane lives. Family does not know what to do with weapons left behind or found hidden in the home.

Why don’t they ever have a Groceries4Guns program for law-abiding citizens? Stop by the police station with some canned goods and they hand you a gun.

All of my guns are worth far more than what they’re offering.

Ever notice how the potheads in the state run “media” ALWAYS refer to their gun buybacks as being “very popular”. If the morons learned how to shoot their guns, they wouldn’t need to trade them in for a bag of groceries. It’s one of those “teach a man how to fish” things.

Is this Ancient Win 1897 a near relative of a WWI Trenchgun? If so you may want to think a little harder about that.

Gee, it was just the other day that Austin PD was being questioned about so many guns going missing from their evidence room. Coincidence? I think not. Sounds like the old “you won Super Bowl tickets” sting. Of course, it might have saved lives and tax dollars if they’d just kept a better check on the evidence.

Whenever I see these “gun buy back” programs, I wonder how many valuable antiques and collector’s items end up in police lockers - only to be destroyed or find their way to market.
