FOX 40 News journalists John Lobertini, Rebecca Little, attacked by angry mourners
nydailynews ^ | Monday, February 21st 2011, 9:04 AM | Michael Sheridan

An angry mob attacked a reporter and a photojournalist Sunday, but it wasn't in the Middle East, it was in California.

The journalists were hit and pushed by family and friends of a young man who had been gunned down the night before outside an International House of Pancakes restaurant in Sacramento.

...

In the footage, Lobertini can be seen approaching a handful of people standing by the memorial as Little recorded the encounter. A woman in glasses and a hoodie quickly begins yelling at the journalists, the video shows, as another in a white cap calmly asks the reporters to "just back off."

...

A person who was at the incident, but did not participate in the violence, told the local news station that it was an emotional day and people were mourning the loss of a loved one.

"A lot of people, they're not in the right state of mind when going through something like this," Meghan Saffold said. "So you know, all I say is, when someone asks you something, that you should respect it and respect their wishes."

Authorities are looking at the video to determine if any charges need to be filed. No arrests have been made.

Obviously, the “journalists” didn’t care about that.

Did you see the video?

This event occurred on a public sidewalk, during the day, in front of an IHOP.

Why shouldn't a journalist be there?

On this one, I tend to sympathise with the mourners. The press hovering around like vultures as they do was bound to provoke a reaction like this.

I’m only surprised it took so long.

If the press wants to ask insensitive, intrusive and inane questions (How did this make you feel?) they should invite people to a neutral spot and interview the willing people there, not interrupt a private gathering, (even if that gathering is on the street) and try to force questions onto someone who is struggling with a loss.

I’m in the family’s corner on this one. They told the vultures to leave several times. They wouldn’t go. What are they going to ask the family? “How do you feel about his death? Do you think the police will find the killers? blah blah blah...”

What an uncivilized lot. I just had a huge personal loss that was needless and senseless. I didn't attack anyone or make excuses for off the wall criminal behavior.
Figure them out, arrest them, and lock them up right f-ing now. No excuses and no get out of jail free cards because they are black. Lock them up and through away the key! If someone wants to act like an ignorant uncivilized moron than there has to be an immediate and significant price payed for those actions.

The mourners are the same people you see on Jerry Springer. If they wanted privacy, they should have had their memorial service in private. Ironically, the station apparently sent their two biggest goons to cover the ceremony.

"it was an emotional day"

What license does emotion give me?

While I don’t condone physical assault, I agree with you.
Reporters always think they have some kind of a right to stick their microphones & cameras anywhere & at anytime they want.

What license does being a “journalist” give them?

I don’t condone getting phsical with the “journalists”.
Hey, you want to defend the “journalists” behavior, go right ahead.

How does it feel to be dead?

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you like to be?

Purrfekly reasonable questions.

Dirty Laundry (Don Henley)

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something, something I can use
People love it when you lose, they love dirty laundry

Well, I could’ve been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don’t have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry

Kick ‘em when they’re up, kick ‘em when they’re down
Kick ‘em when they’re up, kick ‘em when they’re down
Kick ‘em when they’re up, kick ‘em when they’re down
Kick ‘em when they’re up, kick ‘em all around

We got the bubbleheaded bleach-blonde, comes on at 5
She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
It’s interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet?
You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set, we need dirty laundry

You don’t really need to find out what’s going on
You don’t really want to know just how far it’s gone
Just leave well enough alone, keep your dirty laundry

Kick ‘em when they’re up, kick ‘em when they’re down
Kick ‘em when they’re up, kick ‘em when they’re down
Kick ‘em when they’re up, kick ‘em when they’re down
Kick ‘em when they’re stiff, kick ‘em all around

Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody’s pie
Love to cut you down to size, we love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo, we can dance and sing
When it’s said and done, we haven’t told you a thing
We all know that crap is king, give us dirty laundry

Yup. That’s what I thought of when I read it. It’s all about ratings and getting an interview.

In the same situation, I might have been upset and angry, but I can’t imagine mobbing the news people. Cultural thing, I think. Those darn Amish.
