p>He’s right that presidents in living memory overperform in these things, and Reagan probably got a bump this year from coverage of the centennial of his birth and the conservative resurgence last November. Three points, though. One: Er, Lincoln finished second, Washington came fifth, and FDR finished sixth. Not a bad showing for long-dead presidents, and it would have been even better had the lasting, absurd Boomer fascination with JFK not propelled him to fourth. Two: Is this really an argument Matthews wants to make on the very day that his new hagiography of Bill Clinton debuts? (Actual title: “President of the World.”) Talk about grading recent mediocrities on a curve.
And third: Isn’t there someone else on this list who proves his thesis much more elegantly? Good lord, America. How high would unemployment have to be to get The One knocked down to eighth place? Click the image to watch.

If I’m understanding him correctly, he thinks that people don’t remember that Obama is President.
What, no tingle?
Ha! Chrissy was pissy! Love it!
Clinton should be on the bottom of the list. His greatest legacy is the BJ. Now practiced in schools beginning with 2nd graders. Clinton is nothing but a lowlife with great MSM PR. He doesn’t deserve any praise, he deserves a sentence.
Ooh! Testy!
Chrissy looked particularly constipated in reading that list, making excuses all along the way. And he makes it a point to know that this isn’t a poll of historians, but of regular people, as if that somehow diminishes the poll. What a laughable, drunken shill. It must have really burned him up to list Reagan as the top president.
Now that Keith Oberman is gone, now we should concentrate on getting Chrissy off the air. He is totally worthless.
Everything else aside (that they didn’t have to invent a special list so Carter was 107th and Obama 3,487th saddens me ;) ...
Chris Matthews is one unhappy man. I suspect he gets himself psyched-down before a show, so he can win away some of the Howard Beale lovers now that Olbermann is gone. More than a decade ago I enjoyed watching him—he made his loyalties obvious but treated all of this as a game and gave respect to the other side—but now he’s just miserable and looks like he wants to yell all the time.
I think the rise of prominent Republican women really punped up his nostalgia for the old days of the boys’ club. He loved talking about how Tip O’Neil supposedly could have a drink with Reagan—I think the key to that story is not congeniality across party lines, but the idea that we’re all guys under the skin, and could drink and smoke a stogie while ruling the world.
His disdain for Republican women is shrill and outsized, and I can’t just ignore it. I think Palin and Bachman have him realizing he is out of touch and his fantasy of grown up boys hanging out while running everyone else’s lives is just that, a fantasy that never was and now can never be.
So he doesn’t like the outcome so he basically insults the people. What a dork!
He is!
The key to that story is it never happened. Reagan and Nancy had dinner once or twice with the O'Neils and other guests but he and the 'rat leader never sat down with a glass and told Irish jokes after work. Never happened. Being a typical liberal ONeil hated Reagan, and Reagan as always maintained a polite and congenial distance from his adversary but certainly was never foolish enough to trust him enough to drink with him.. The story is one of Matthews drunken urban legendary fantasies.
So true, LOL!
Reagan #1 and obozo 7 has got to sting!
Criying like a little girl.
Pray for America
Well, the ‘rats divided their votes between Kennedy, Clinton, 0bama, and Carter. The pubbies only had one obvious choice - Renaldus Magnus.
He was hoping that Obama was #1 again so he could get some tinkle on his leg again
It’s their “brand” of Christianity that sends him around the bend.
