Two-Thirds of WI Pub.-School 8th Graders Can’t Read Proficiently—Despite Highest Per Pupil...

(CNSNews.com) - Two-thirds of the eighth graders in Wisconsin public schools cannot read proficiently according to the U.S. Department of Education, despite the fact that Wisconsin spends more per pupil in its public schools than any other state in the Midwest.

In the National Assessment of Educational Progress tests administered by the U.S. Department of Education in 2009—the latest year available—only 32 percent of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders earned a “proficient” rating while another 2 percent earned an “advanced” rating. The other 66 percent of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders earned ratings below “proficient,” including 44 percent who earned a rating of “basic” and 22 percent who earned a rating of “below basic.”

The test also showed that the reading abilities of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders had not improved at all between 1998 and 2009 despite a significant inflation-adjusted increase in the amount of money Wisconsin public schools spent per pupil each year.

Ugh, but digging through this maze of mind dulling statistics I found an apparent statement that despite the dismal looking figures, Wisconsin still beats all its neighbors except for Minnesota in student performance in reading.

Maybe this complaint should be made nationwide, rather than focusing on Wisconsin.

I wonder where you can find how well students are doing compared to 20 or 30 years ago.

Sounds like New Jersey and the Abbott District scam.

Newark, NJ students get about $27,000 per pupil and the school system still stinks.

I hear the media touting some sill stat that grades Wisconsin scools a #2. If that is #2 we are in bigger trouble than I thought! That statistic makes the NEA look like morons. I wouldn’t be bringing that up again if I were them.

This is a national tragedy. If you can't read, and can't read well in the workplace, you are handicapped. If you can't read well, you can't write well. If you can't read and write well, you can't speak well. And on it goes. . . but fertile ground for community organizing. .

I think most freepers are aware of this, but in case anyone is unclear:

There is an inverse relationship which can be demonstrated regarding school spending and pupil performance. Washington DC spends more per pupil than any other school district. The kids receive virtually nothing in terms of meaningful education. This article talks about Wisconsin. High spending, poor performance. New Jersey? Same thing.

When your town or your state says that it wants to increase spending on education, do you know what they are really saying?? "We want to make your kids dumber."

Throwing money at schools makes them perform worse. Is that true 100% of the time? No. It's not literally true 100% of the time.

But for your local school? It's probably true. We spend too much on education. Believe it.

...NJ students get about $27,000 per pupil and the school system still stinks.

That's over 1/2 mil for a class of 20!
For that amount, everybody ought to have received a stellar education.
Obviously lack of money is not the problem.

Test the teachers. I bet they would get similar results. If they fail, fire them. If they protest and take time away from school, fire them. If they are ungrateful for having a public sector job with benefits better than private sector jobs, fire them. The louder the protests, the more scrutiny these idiots will get. Average of $89,000 salary plus benefits (about $20,000 more than in the private sector. At least two months off in the summer, another month between teacher’s conferences (why are these never held in the summer time???), Christmas holidays, spring break, etc. Little or no contributions for medical or pensions. Not a lot to complain about.

I'm not sure what Math program they are using in Wisconsin, but if WI uses Everyday Mathematics our your state does - You need to stop it now.

Math Education: An Inconvenient Truth

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr1qee-bTZI

It took a fight, but our WA (Kent school district) dumped it this year. They were as horrible as the lady in the video says. Even for my son's 2nd grade, The wife and I had a horrible time helping him with his math homework because we could not understand 2nd grade algorithms, and he could sense our frustration. This year with a new program it is much better and more like what we learned in the 70s

Very useful to compare States educational results. I suggest that the average scores by race be used, as the different racial makeup of the states actually explains most of the differences, and we have to get beyond that to come to anything like a meaningful comparison.

The results of a disaggregated analysis are very interesting.

Texas, for instance, more or less matches Wisconsin for white and hispanic 8th grade students. The only reason Wisconsin looks good relative to Texas is that unlike Texas most of Wisconsins students are white.

8th Grade Mathematics 2009 Avg Score
Wisconsin Texas
White 271 273
Black 258 249
Hispanic 250 251

Oops, that should be labelled Reading scores, not Math.

Texas far outdoes Wisconsin in Math, btw.

“There is an inverse relationship which can be demonstrated regarding school spending and pupil performance.”

And don’t forget the outrageous salaries that the administrators at the failing schools are paid. It’s always the same rationalization any time they hire somebody new: “We need to pay this exorbitant salary in order to attract quality people and turn the school around.”... And yet the school never gets “turned around”, and then they hire somebody else at an even higher salary, and then...

With teachers like those that create the sign shown above, how is this result surprising?
