SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A northern Indiana restaurant that erected billboards referring to the 1978 Jonestown cult massacre in which more than 900 people died has removed the signs following complaints that the signs were offensive.
Jeff Leslie, vice president of sales and marketing at Hacienda, acknowledged that the billboards were a mistake. He said the South Bend-based company ordered the signs removed less than two weeks into Hacienda's new advertising campaign.
"Our role is not to be controversial or even edgy. We want to be noticed -- and there's a difference," Leslie told the South Bend Tribune. "We have a responsibility to (advertise) with care, and that's why we're pulling this ad. We made a mistake and don't want to have a negative image in the community."
The billboards included the statement, "We're like a cult with better Kool-Aid," over a glass containing a mixed drink, as well as the phrase "To die for!"

Oh, if Jim Jones were connected to say, Jim DeMint or Haley Barbour, do you think AP would ever leave out the connection to the GOP?

But you’re right about Jones. He was a wacko lefty and then took it one step further and set up his very own religion, preying mostly on poor black people (and confused white liberal female “seekers”). He was very popular with the San Francisco press just about until the end.
CNS News is a start. We just need to be able to sell the coverage in multiple cities, the infrastructure is a lot easier.
He also got the support of many current Democratic politicians, but CNN and the History Channel left those out, mysteriously.
I’d suggest some kind of appliance like a cross between an answering machine and an iPod. Those who have internet would get podcasts. Those who don’t, would get brief automated calls to their phone which would send the information by modem into the answerer. Then a synthesized voice would speak the news. Or it could be read on a screen.

The first item would be to find a media outlet. They are egg-spensive.

There would be customers. There are many small local conservative papers. NY Post, Wash. Times, Wall St Jo, etc.

CNS has a private agenda I have yet to fully understand. Also, I’m pretty sure they started as Catholic News Service, and later changed it to Cybercast. They go particularly ape about attacks on Catholics by the media. Good for them, that’s fine. But that’s not what I’m calling for here.
Their top guy (what’s his name? He goes on Fox sometimes these days?) writes stuff that does NOT jive with the good liberty-conservative philosophy we have here.
I would also say that had children not been among the dead (having been forced to drink the poison), I would have no problems with ridiculing self destructive, leftist cult members decades after they offed themselves.
Print media would be a TOUGH road. The distribution would be the killer. Interestingly, large and medium sized cities would be the easiest due to audience density and transportation infrastructure.
TV is expensive and hard to get into.
Cybercast perhaps but still expensive to get it out of "Amateur" status.
This is probably why it has not been done yet.
Still, it would be nice to kick back at the work desk and pop open your fresh copy of “Conservative Tribune”

I think “to die for” was what made it unfunny.
I was living in SF when this happened, and the majority of the people in the community of the “Reverend Jones” were poor, ignorant black ladies and their grandchildren, middle-aged white liberal female “seekers,” and a few politically motivated henchmen (who did not stay there to die, btw).
I lived in the Mission District and members of this group were always slipping things in under your doorway, and in addition, they had big bashes where all the major Dem politicos (such as Moscone) showed up, so you were constantly bombarded by publicity from Jim Jones.
Jones got these very vulnerable people into his group and used them as his base, particularly for the press. There were some white male leftists, but the majority of them were smart enough to bail on this before it got to the Kool-Aid.
Of course, the press kept supporting the whole endeavor because it was perceived as leftist and Jones himself described it as a “socialist paradise.” Jim Jones even told the community, at the very end, that they should die as good Communists. Jim Ryan, the Dem Congressman who went down to investigate, was an ethical man and he was blown away when he arrived.
Naturally, to make Christianity look bad, Jones is described as a “Christian.” But he wasn’t a Christian, he was a radical leftist, a nutcase, and used the “church” imagery only because that ingraciated him with the black church ladies that he relied upon to make him media-palatable.
