Providence plans to pink slip all teachers

PROVIDENCE — The school district plans to send out dismissal notices to every one of its 1,926 teachers, an unprecedented move that has union leaders up in arms.

In a letter sent to all teachers Tuesday, Supt. Tom Brady wrote that the Providence School Board on Thursday will vote on a resolution to dismiss every teacher, effective the last day of school.

In an e-mail sent to all teachers and School Department staff, Brady said, “We are forced to take this precautionary action by the March 1 deadline given the dire budget outline for the 2011-2012 school year in which we are projecting a near $40 million deficit for the district,” Brady wrote. “Since the full extent of the potential cuts to the school budget have yet to be determined, issuing a dismissal letter to all teachers was necessary to give the mayor, the School Board and the district maximum flexibility to consider every cost savings option, including reductions in staff.” State law requires that teachers be notified about potential changes to their employment status by March 1.

“To be clear about what this means,” Brady wrote, “this action gives the School Board the right to dismiss teachers as necessary, but not all teachers will actually be dismissed at the end of the school year.”

“This is beyond insane,” Providence Teachers Union President Steve Smith said Tuesday night. “Let’s create the most chaos and the highest level of anxiety in a district where teachers are already under unbelievable stress. Now I know how the United States State Department felt on Dec. 7 , 1941.” That was the day the Japanese government bombed Pearl Harbor.

I was with you up to here, but “whale’s vagina” is just too big of a stretch. ;-)

Good. I wish more school districts would start to play hard ball with these teacher unions.

Our school distract pulled a strike. They totally got away with it. They’re so overpaid here in NYS, it’s pathetic.

You know, just that statement makes me hate this guy.

I know what you mean. They've been at the government teat so long they don't know how out of touch and ridiculous they are.

This situation may not be that unusual.

I think your analysis is right on. I didn't see anything amounting to modification of union rights. It's just a temporary budget maneuver. Providence is a backwater of leftist union corruption and cronyism. I doubt any of this has to do with taxpayers getting a clue.

"Now I know how the United States State Department felt on Dec. 7 , 1941."

Over 2,400 people died in Pearl Harbor, but this socialist worm won't identify with the likes of them. Oh, no. Maybe he thinks Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State back then.

You can't fight people like this with words. They'll win every time because what they say is so insane that there's no rational response. Eventually America will realize this, then the fun will really start.

Look for the union label on a Court near you.

So true. The teachers union might even come out with a better deal than they have now. It's to be expected in Rhode Island.

This is my fear for Wisconsin. The Governor will fire some teachers and the Court will reinstate them WITH back pay.

Oh please. This Socialist scum doesn't have a CLUE what real war and combat entail.

Having to cough up a few more bucks for your own health insurance isn't the same as Pearl Harbor!

Then I would dare the judge to enforce his/her decision.

Let's be clear: whomever backs down in this crisis loses everything.

"the difference between a union teacher and a sloppy clown-like comedian."

Sloppy clown-like comedians pay a higher share of their health care and retirement.

Time for Americans to go to mostly Private and homeschooling.

I remember when people felt sympathy for teachers when I was a kid because their wages weren't all that good.

I agree that teaching is a tough job (I was a teacher for a few years).

But when teachers are making 1 1/2 or double what the average citizen that is paying taxes to pay them.....it's hard to muster up sympathy for them. Especially when they ask union thugs to help out.
