Editorial: California should kill 'train to nowhere'
The Orange County Register ^ | 2-23-2011 | Mark Landsbaum

A wave of rational, common sense is sweeping the nation. Four states have rejected billions of dollars in federal money for high-speed rail construction, realizing long-term costs far outweigh wishful-thinking benefits.

That's good news. The bad news is California political leaders, from Gov. Jerry Brown to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, want to spend the money wisely rejected by governors in Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa and most recently Florida, for California's own proposed high-speed train. . . .

California's money so far is likely to finance the system's first leg, linking two tiny Central Valley cities. In our view, it's not unlikely the whole effort could begin and end with what's been dubbed the "train to nowhere," connecting the tiny towns of Borden and Corcoran.

This is a joke, right? Borden and Corcoran? Insane. This whole "high speed rail" thing is just a way to create more union employees and throw more money down that rathole at taxpayer expense.

I support high speed rail in California - if it’s to take illegals back to Mexico.

The claim they are GUARANTEED job creators.

So for every dollar spent, FIRST reduce welfare by $1.10.

I wish they’d give the axe to this stupid train they’re doing up above San Francisco. It’s going to run down to Larkspur (well, maybe, someday ... they can’t even get that right!) so then you have to take the ferry over to SF. Stupid. Who has time/money to bother with the ferry every single day? The train should have gone to a spot near the GG Bridge where a bus could connect up with it and take the passengers over the Bridge to downtown. But that wouldn’t be sceeeeeeenic and romaaaaaantic enough, would it? freakin’ waste of tax money. Grrr.

Train runs from someplace noone wants to be to someplace noone wants to go.

150m spent on wes light rail in Portland when it runs only 8 times a day on weekdays only. A bus costs a fraction of this.
Absurdity rules

Exactly! And this is going to be the same kind of boondoggle. I want to know who’s pushing this Larkspur train deal and getting their cut. I’m sure someone’s getting paid off. Because it makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

And yet my neighbors voted for this idiocy. Sigh....

There may be a couple of people that may want to go to Corcoran to visit their incarcerated relatives, but no one ever goes to Borden. President Palin, please cancel this train to nowhere.

The Train is a good idea BUT—lets not build this thing until we have a budget surplus! Put it on the back burner. BUT With the price of gas going up, up, up—we may well need a train, a trolley and rickshaws soon enough.

‘______wes light rail in portland.’

I have used the Light Rail in CO when visiting our daughter. Winter and summer.
It’s about a half hour ride from Littleton to Denver - even used it to ‘slum’ around the 16th St. Mall, wearing my McCain buttons, on the last day of the Dems Convention in 2008!
No one cat-called or spat on me.....

A man, of my variety, came up to me and asked who I thought was going to be the V.P. pick.
I eliminated two of the frontrunners, and said to him
‘——and then there’s Sarah Palin.’
He shook my hand and said that was his choice, too.
We parted without even exchanging names!

The next morning I woke up in the guest room, flipped on the T.V., and everyone’s going wild: McCain has named Sarah Palin as his running mate!
How I wished I could have talked once again with that stranger. I can only imagine he was beside himself, too!

Anyway, the Light Rail in Denver runs often and everyday. Hope it’s still true. There are other lines to this train, not just the one I rode.
I have never heard anyone, anywhere, talk about this train.

You should see the Bronco fans park and ride. It’s so convenient to the sport’s fields.
So, I believe that’s one successful train transportation situation.
It actually goes where people want to go - guess that’s the secret alright!

Of all the HSR boondoggles, one from nowhere to nowhere is the best, least worst. That way we don’t have to pay for the conductors, or subsidize, for ever, every ticket, every ride. In leftists econ think. We will save money than if the train went from somewhere to somewhere. ( A compromise would be a train from say LA, out into the desert. That would only, about, maybe if the union isn’t too strong, increase costs by half. )

Think like a leftard.

I’m not aware of any light passanger train system that even covers its day to day operations costs. Building it, pensions, day to day costs are born by the taxpayers.

IE, the market doesn’t want it, enough to pay for it.

178 Billion with a per passenger operating cost higher than an airplane. This train is going to require yearly subsidies in hundreds of millions of dollars.

Do you know how many airplanes and airport improvements could be made with the same amount of money?

‘______are born by the taxpayers.’

I truly have no idea how the Denver Light Rail operates.

My observation is that it has dense rider-ship, unlike the accusations in other areas of the country where it is said no one will ride the dam_ trains - - -

No way either am I for being forced out of my car into public transportation, but this Denver Light Rail suits my needs when I’m there.

And there’s an awful lot of Denverites whose needs are being met, also, judging by the often packed ‘carriages.’
Haven’t heard of mass begrudging their Light Rail - - -

I’ll ask my daughter and son-in-law the particulars.
